Why Set Custom Ringtones?

Giving a special ringtone to important contacts is a really useful trick. It lets you recognize calls from family, close friends, or key colleagues instantly. This is great for times when you can’t check your phone, like when you’re driving or in a meeting. You can prioritize answering those calls or just enjoy a bit of personalization.

Steps to Assign a Custom Ringtone

The process is simple and done right from your Contacts or Phone app.

Open Your Contacts

Start by opening your Phone app or your Contacts app. This is where you manage all your saved contacts.

Select the Contact

Find and tap on the name of the contact you want to give a custom ringtone. This opens their detailed contact page.

Access the Ringtone Menu

On the contact’s details screen, look for the menu button. This is usually three vertical dots () in the top or bottom corner. Tap it.

From the menu that appears, select the option that says “Set ringtone” or “Change ringtone.”

Choose Your Sound

You’ll now see a list of sounds. This list includes:

  • Your phone’s default ringtones.
  • The option for “None” (which makes the call silent for this contact).
  • An option to browse for audio files stored on your phone if you want to use a custom song or sound.

Tap on the ringtone you want to assign. Then, tap OK or Save to confirm your choice.

How to Change or Remove a Custom Ringtone

If you want to change the sound later or go back to the default, it’s easy.

  1. Go back to that contact’s details page.
  2. Tap the menu and select “Set ringtone” again.
  3. To go back to your standard ringtone, select the “Default” option from the list and save.
  4. The contact will now ring with whatever sound you have set as your phone’s general ringtone.

A Helpful Tip

You don’t need to set a unique ringtone for everyone. It can get confusing with too many different sounds. A good approach is to have just two or three:

  1. One special sound for your most important contacts (like family).
  2. Your regular default ringtone for everyone else.

This way, you’ll immediately know when a truly important call is coming through.

By following these steps, you can easily personalize your Android phone and make identifying callers quicker and easier.
