A common question is how to change the calling line on iPhone for a single call. This is useful if you need to use your work line for a business call or your personal line for other calls.

Managing multiple cellular plans on one device is convenient when you know how to control them. This video covers the steps to select your line both before dialing and in your general settings.

Understanding Your Two Lines

First, it helps to know how your iPhone labels your lines. You have two active cellular plans: one on the physical SIM card and one on the eSIM.

Your iPhone needs a way to tell them apart. You name them yourself during setup. Common names are:

  • Primary and Secondary
  • Personal and Work
  • Home and Travel

You will see these names whenever you choose a line. If you never set them, they might just be called “Cellular 1” and “Cellular 2.”

How to Choose a Line for a Single Call

This is perfect when you want to switch numbers just for one phone call. You do this right in the Phone app.

  1. Open the Phone app and go to the Keypad tab.
  2. Look at the top of the screen, just above the numbers. You will see your current default line listed (for example, it might say “Primary”).
  3. Tap on that line’s name. A small menu will pop down showing both of your available lines.
  4. Tap to select the line you want to use for this specific call.
  5. Dial the number and press the green call button. Your call will now go out using the line you just selected.

That’s all it takes. The next time you open the keypad, it will usually switch back to your default line.

How to Set Your Default Line for All Calls

If you find yourself using one line (like your Personal number) for 90% of your calls, you can set it as the default. This saves you from having to switch every time.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Cellular.
  3. Look for the section labeled Default Voice Line.
  4. Tap it. You will see a list of your lines.
  5. Select the line you want to be your new default for outgoing calls.

Now, whenever you open the Phone app’s keypad, it will automatically be set to use this line.

How to See Which Line You’re Using During a Call

It’s easy to forget which line you picked after you’ve made a call. Here’s a quick way to check.

  1. While you are on an active call, look at the top of your iPhone’s screen (in the status bar).
  2. You will see the cellular signal strength indicator. If you have two lines active, you will see two sets of signal bars.
  3. The set of bars that has the green phone icon next to it is the line you are currently using for the call.

Quick Tips for Managing Two Lines

  • Name Your Lines Clearly: If you haven’t already, give your lines clear names. Go to Settings > Cellular, tap on each line, and choose Cellular Plan Label to rename them. “Work” and “Personal” is much clearer than “Cellular 1” and “Cellular 2.”
  • Data Switching: In your Cellular settings, you can also allow “Allow Cellular Data Switching.” If this is on, your iPhone can automatically use the secondary line’s data if the primary line has a weak connection. You can turn this on or off based on your data plan limits.
  • iMessage & FaceTime: Remember, you can also choose which line to use for iMessage and FaceTime. These settings are separate and found in Settings > Messages and Settings > FaceTime.

Using two lines on one iPhone is a powerful feature once you know how to control it. You can keep your life organized and always make sure the right number shows up on the caller ID.
