Clear App Data Reset Apps on Samsung Android

How to Clear App Data and Reset Apps on Samsung Android Phones.

Learn how to fix app issues like crashes or freezes by clearing app data on your Samsung device.

If an app on your Samsung phone is acting strange, crashing, or just not working right, clearing its data can help. This is like resetting the app to how it was when you first installed it. It is also useful if you want to start a game over from the beginning when the game does not have its own reset option.

This guide uses a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra running Android 14 with OneUI 6.1. The steps are very similar on most other Samsung Galaxy phones.

Clear Cache vs Clear Data – What Is the Difference?

Before you start, it helps to know the difference between these two options.

Clear cache removes temporary files that apps store to load faster. This might include things like thumbnails or website previews. Clearing cache does not remove your login info, settings, or personal data. It is safe to try first when an app is acting up.

Clear data removes everything. This includes your login information, settings, preferences, and any files saved inside the app. After you clear data, the app looks and acts like you just installed it from the Play Store for the first time.

When Should You Clear Data?

Here are some situations where clearing data makes sense:

· An app keeps crashing or freezing even after you restart your phone
· You want to reset a game to start from the beginning but the game has no reset option
· You are selling or giving away your phone and want to remove your data from specific apps
· An app is misbehaving and clearing the cache did not help

A Warning Before You Start

Clearing app data will permanently delete your information inside that app. If you have important notes, messages, or game progress stored only on your phone (not synced to the cloud), you will lose them.

For example, if you clear data on a notes app that saves everything locally on your phone, those notes will be gone. If the same notes app syncs to the cloud, you can get them back after logging in again.

How to Clear Cache or Clear Data for a Single App

Here is how to reset an app on your Samsung phone:

· Find the app icon on your home screen or in the app drawer
· Long press on the app icon until a menu pops up
· Tap the info button (it looks like a small circle with an “”i”” inside)
· This opens the App info page
· Tap on Storage
· You will see two buttons: Clear cache and Clear data

To try the safe option first:

· Tap Clear cache
· Force close the app and open it again to see if the problem is fixed

To fully reset the app:

· Tap Clear data
· Read the warning message that appears
· Confirm that you want to delete the data
· The app is now reset to its original state

What Happens After You Clear Data

Once you clear data, the app will act like a fresh install. When you open it again, you will need to:

· Log back into your account (if you had one)
· Set your preferences again
· Re-download any saved content that was stored only on your phone

The app itself stays installed. You do not need to go to the Google Play Store to reinstall anything.

A Quick Troubleshooting Order

If an app is not working right, try these steps in order:

· Restart your phone first – this fixes many small issues
· Clear the app cache only
· If that does not work, clear the app data
· If clearing data does not help, try uninstalling and reinstalling the app from the Play Store.
