Clear App Data and Cache on Android

How to Clear App Data and Cache on Android to Reset Apps.

Learn how to reset an app by deleting its data and cache so you can fix problems or start fresh.

If an app on your Android phone is not working properly, clearing its cache or data can often help. This is also useful if you want to reset a game to the beginning when the game itself does not have a reset option. Clearing app data lets you start fresh without uninstalling and reinstalling from the Google Play Store.

This guide uses a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 15. The steps are very similar on most other Android phones.

Clear Cache vs Clear Data – What Is the Difference?

These two options do different things. It helps to know which one to use.

Clear cache removes temporary files that apps create to load faster. This might include images, previews, or other small pieces of data. Clearing cache does not remove your login information, settings, or personal files. It is safe to try first when an app is acting slow or glitchy.

Clear data removes everything. This includes your login details, preferences, settings, and any files saved inside the app. After you clear data, the app looks and acts exactly like it did when you first installed it.

When Should You Clear App Data?

Here are some situations where clearing data makes sense:

· An app keeps crashing or freezing even after you restart your phone
· You want to reset a game to start from level one but the game has no reset button
· An app is misbehaving and clearing the cache did not help
· You want to remove all your personal information from an app before giving away your phone

A Warning Before You Clear Data

Clearing app data will permanently delete your information inside that app. If the app does not sync with the cloud, you will lose everything stored locally on your phone.

For example, if you clear data on a notes app that only saves notes to your phone, those notes will be gone forever. If the same notes app syncs to the cloud, you can get your notes back after logging in again.

Always double check that any important information is backed up or synced before clearing data.

How to Clear Cache or Clear Data for a Single App

Here are the steps to reset an app on your Android phone:

· Find the app icon on your home screen or in your app drawer
· Long press on the app icon
· Tap on App info from the menu that appears
· Tap on Storage and cache (on some phones this may just say Storage)
· You will see two options: Clear cache and Clear storage (or Clear data)

To try the safe option first:

· Tap Clear cache
· Close the app completely by swiping it away from your recent apps menu
· Open the app again to see if the problem is fixed

To fully reset the app:

· Tap Clear storage or Clear data
· Read the warning message that pops up
· Confirm that you want to delete the data
· The app is now reset to its original state

What Happens After You Clear Data

Once you clear data, the app will behave like a fresh install. When you open it again, you may need to:

· Log back into your account if you had one
· Set up your preferences again
· Re-download or recreate any content that was saved only on your phone

The app itself stays installed. You do not need to go to the Google Play Store to reinstall anything.

A Quick Troubleshooting Order

If an app is not working right, try these steps in order from least to most extreme:

· Restart your phone – this fixes many small issues on its own
· Clear the app cache only
· If that does not work, clear the app data
· If clearing data does not help, uninstall the app completely and reinstall it from the Google Play Store

Most of the time, clearing the cache is enough to fix small problems. Clearing data is a bigger step, but it works well when you need a true fresh start.
