How to block a number after a call, I show you how to do that quickly from your recent calls list. If you receive frequent unwanted calls, learning how to use the block feature is important.
Managing your incoming calls effectively helps you control interruptions. This video covers the basic steps to decline calls and manage your call history.
How to Decline a Call When Your iPhone is Unlocked
This is the simplest method. When a call comes in and you are using your phone, you will see a full-screen caller ID.
On this screen, you have two clear options:
- To answer, tap the green Accept button.
- To decline, tap the red Decline button.
Tapping the red Decline button immediately stops the ringing on your end and sends the caller straight to your voicemail.
How to Decline a Call When Your iPhone is Locked
Your phone rings, but it’s locked on your desk or in your pocket. You don’t want to answer. Here’s what to do.
When the call screen appears on your locked display, you will see a slider or buttons.
For most iPhones with a Home Button (like older models):
You will see a “slide to answer” bar. To decline, you simply press the side (or top) power button twice quickly. The call will be silenced and sent to voicemail.
For newer iPhones without a Home Button (iPhone X and later):
The lock screen shows two buttons: a red phone icon and a green phone icon.
- To decline, press the side power button (or either volume button) once. This will silence the ring.
- To send it to voicemail immediately, press the side power button twice quickly.
What Happens When You Decline a Call?
It’s helpful to know what the caller experiences on the other end. When you decline a call:
- Your phone stops ringing instantly.
- The caller hears the phone ring a few more times (or sometimes it cuts off immediately) and is then connected to your voicemail greeting.
- The caller does not get a specific notification saying you declined. From their perspective, it seems like you just didn’t pick up in time.
The declined call will appear in your Phone app > Recents list with a red “missed call” icon next to it, so you know who tried to reach you.
How to Block a Number After Declining a Call
If you get an unwanted call from a telemarketer or spam number, you can block it directly from your call history to prevent future calls.
Here are the steps to block a number:
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the Recents tab at the bottom.
- Find the number you want to block. Tap the information icon (ⓘ) next to it.
- Scroll down on the contact info page and tap Block this Caller.
- Confirm by tapping Block Contact.
Once blocked, calls, messages, and FaceTime calls from that number will no longer come through to your iPhone.
Quick Tip: The Difference Between Silencing and Declining
It’s easy to mix these up, but they are different:
- Silencing a call: You press the side power button once or a volume button. The ringing stops on your end, but the call is still active. It will continue to ring for the caller until it goes to voicemail. This is polite if you’re in a meeting and can’t talk, but plan to call back.
- Declining a call: You press the red button or the power button twice. This actively rejects the call, sending it straight to voicemail right away. This is best for calls you know you don’t want to answer.
Learning these simple steps gives you full control over your incoming calls, helping you manage interruptions and focus on what’s important.
