How to Delete Contacts on iPhone

I show you how to remove contacts from your iPhone. This is useful for cleaning up your address book and deleting old or unused numbers. Learn the steps to delete a single contact or multiple contacts at once.

This guide is based on iOS 26 Beta 5 on an iPhone 16 Pro Max Titanium Black 256 GB global model A3296 – MYWV3ZD/A.

How to Delete a Single Contact on iPhone

I show you how to do this in the Contacts app. Here are the steps:

• Open the Contacts app on your iPhone
• Find the contact you want to remove – you can scroll through the list or use the search bar at the top
• Tap on the contact’s name to open their information page
• Scroll all the way down to the bottom of the screen
• Tap “Delete Contact”
• A confirmation message will pop up – tap “Delete Contact” again to confirm

After you confirm, the contact is deleted right away. This action removes the contact from your iCloud and all devices connected to your Apple ID.

A Quick Note About Editing Instead of Deleting

If you want to remove a contact to add it again with changes, there is a better way. You don’t have to delete and start over. Instead:

• Open the contact you want to change
• Tap “Edit” in the top right corner
• Change the name, number, or any other information
• Tap “Done” to save your changes

This keeps the same contact but updates the info you need to fix.

How to Delete Multiple Contacts at Once

You can delete multiple contacts on your iPhone. This saves time if you need to clean up many entries at once. Here is how:

• Open the Contacts app
• Tap “Select” in the top right corner of the screen
• Tap each contact you want to remove – a checkmark will appear next to their name
• Tap “Delete” at the bottom of the screen
• Confirm that you want to delete all selected contacts

Finding the Contact You Want to Remove

The easiest way to find the contact you want to remove is to use the search function. You can also look in the Recents tab in your Phone app. If you see a number there that you want to remove, tap the blue “i” icon next to it, then tap the contact name to open their full contact page and follow the delete steps above.

What Happens After You Delete a Contact

After deletion, any missed calls or messages from that number will show up as an unknown number or just the phone number without any contact name attached. The contact will not come back unless you add it again manually.
