IKEA MITTZON Standing Desk Overview

The MITTZON is €450. Usually these adjustable desks are expensive, especially the controller.

This controller has an adjustable setting, manual, and then you can also have two presets.

  • The first dot on the left is the lower preset, or actually any preset you want.
  • The second on the right is the second preset.

When you keep the arrow pressed, it moves up or down depending on which arrow you are pressing.

It also has some kind of cable management adjustment.

How the Motors and Controller Work

The most important parts are the controller and the motors.

The motors are in the legs. The controller is going to be in this frame, inside of that metal frame. It is basically a power supply from what is understood.

The motors are the legs themselves. They are telescopic and they extend and retract based on how you set it here.

How to Save and Recall Presets

If you want to set a preset at whichever height you are now, you do a long press on those buttons and then it saves the current position.

When you recall the preset, you just press the buttons one or two and it goes to that position. It is not very fast moving.

When you do a long press, it does a light flash and then it saves the current position.

Motor Safety Stop

It has a few important safety features. If you are for example under the desk and it is trying to press against your back or your legs, if it detects resistance it will go back a little bit higher.

You can see how it goes up when it touches a chair and then it can be adjusted to the closed position. That is really good for safety.

Desk Stability and Wobble

Everything is pretty good about adjusting it, but it still wobbles a little bit.

The speed of the motors is not that great. It would be nice if it was a little bit faster.

The legs feel pretty stable, pretty heavy. But it seemed like the whole even the top part of the leg was moving a little bit.

Any kind of telescoping system will move. The leg itself is moving. So this wobble is there. It is there to stay. Hopefully they will make better versions of this.

It is not easy to make the thing telescopic and to make it sturdy at the same time. This is a difficult situation. The actual desk is moving, the whole thing.

Maybe it is not a big problem for many people, but a simple desk does not do any of this. Any normal desk, a regular desk that is not adjustable, will not be acceptable to have that much wobble.

In this case, you want to accept some wobble because it is telescopic and it is in a standing position. When it is in the lower position, it would have less wobble.

Two Profiles Idea

If you have multiple people using the same desk, then you might want to have something like a profile. So you have two profiles with separate sitting position and standing position. Probably they will have that at some point.

IKEA RODULF Standing Desk Overview

There is also even a cheaper option, €350. This model of the table has a more simple system, RODULF.

The adjustment system is simply up and down.

Manual Adjustable Standing Desks

You might even have standing desks with manual adjustments. So you are spinning some kind of wheel, some kind of pulley without anything electronic.

Those ones, even though they might be cheaper in general, I do not think it is a good idea to get one of those.

Comparing the Two Models

This one, the RODULF, is even less sturdy than the MITTZON.

The MITTZON has the controller with presets and more sturdy legs. Maybe the legs are the same, but the controller is better, so it has to be with the controller like this.

Cables and Desktop PC Considerations

With a desktop PC you would need to make sure all the cables are long enough for anything you have on the desk like screens, keyboard and mouse or other devices.

The wires from the computer would have to have some kind of extensions on them. Or put the computer on the desk, and then if that thing wobbles like that it would not be good for the hard drives.

If the computer is on the floor, the wires have to extend until it reaches the top there.

So it is nice if you are using simply a laptop or a small computer without a hard drive, because you do not want the hard drives to get any shocks.

Preset Accuracy

Look how it stopped exactly on top of the chair. When you save the preset, it really saves it and remembers the position precisely. So that is really good. It will not change from one movement to another.

Who Is a Standing Desk For

This standing desk is really useful for when you do not have too many things around and you just have your computer and even a laptop.

If you really want a standing desk, then you could use one of those manually adjusted ones and keep it in the standing only position, or maybe change it very rarely.

But if using this desk, you would probably switch between standing and sitting a few times. For example, standing for half hour, sitting for half hour, one hour, standing for one hour. It is not easy to be in the same position at all, especially standing.

Desk Size

The MITTZON is 140 by 80 cm. Also not very wide. But you can adjust that. The desk size is adjustable.

You could build it from the parts because you can buy the motors. The top of the desk could be a wider one.

The controller can be put in any place, on any side of the desk.

Final Thoughts

They are really making really great progress. The speed might be okay actually because you do not want them to go too fast. You want them to be stable.

The price for this is a little bit expensive. A desk like this will be expensive because the motors, the controller, everything. It is not just a desk, it is a whole machine adjusting to the height.

Everything is pre-made in IKEA. Everything fits together nicely. You have all the tools you need to arrange it.

I hope this helps you get an idea of the standing adjustable desk from IKEA.
