How to Clean a USB-C Port with Paper.

I show you how to clean the USB-C port on your Android phone, iPhone, or iPad. A common problem is when your charger won’t plug in all the way or the connection feels loose, which is often caused by dust and lint stuck in the port.

I’ll show you on iPadOS 26 on iPad Pro M5 13 Inch 2025 model.

How to Find Your USB-C Port

First you have to find the USB port. Before, iPhones and iPads used to have the lightning port. If it is a newer model of iPad, you will have a USB-C port.

The USB-C port looks like this:

• It is reversible
• It has a hole in the middle
• It has no contacts on the outside

The lightning port has the contacts on the outside. USB-C is without contacts on the outside.

You can tell you have a USB-C port because it has a slot in the middle.

Before You Clean: Check Your Cable and Power

If your iPad is not charging or it stops charging, the first thing to do is make sure you are using a good cable. Change the cable before you go any further. Also change the power point. You can use a USB port from a laptop or a computer if you do not have another power adapter.

How to Make Your Paper Cleaning Tool

You can use a toothpick to clean around the port, but I prefer to use just paper. A4 paper works well. Here are the steps to make the tool:

1. Take a piece of A4 paper. You do not need much. A small piece is more than enough.
2. Start folding the paper.
3. Fold it so it forms a corner. Make sure this corner stays sharp.
4. Fold it again and make sure the edges are properly aligned.
5. The corner should be nice and well defined.
6. Fold the paper one more time on this corner to make it really sharp.
7. You now have a cleaning tool for the USB port.

The reason I use paper instead of a toothpick is that a toothpick might be too hard and could damage the port. Paper is softer and safer.

How to Clean the USB-C Port

Here are the steps to clean your USB-C port with the folded paper:

1. Put the paper on the top side of the port.
2. The paper acts like a scoop.
3. Press it all the way in.
4. Fold it and scoop out.
5. Slide it to the other edge and pull it outside.
6. This will scrape the walls and the back of the port.
7. You can also put it on the edges.
8. Reverse it for the other side.

Make sure you are not trying to do any damage to the little thing in the middle of the port. Flatten the paper again if you put it in the middle. Clean up and down.

You will see lint, pocket lint, or some kind of cloth material come out.

Cleaning an iPhone USB-C Port

You can use the same method to clean your iPhone USB-C port. Take the same piece of paper and:

1. Put the paper in.
2. Slide it and pull it out.
3. Do the other side.
4. Turn it around and do from the top to the bottom.

You may see some dust coming out. The paper might get damaged. You can make another one. The most important thing is to be careful with the USB-C port and not damage the contacts inside.

Cleaning an Android Phone USB-C Port

This is my old Android phone, a Xiaomi phone. Using the same method:

1. Insert the paper into the USB-C port.
2. Try the other side.
3. You will see something coming out.
4. Straighten the paper.
5. Insert it again.
6. You will see dust coming out.

Why This Works

If you have lint, fabric material, or dust settling at the back of the port, every time you insert the USB cable, you press this dust to the back of the port. What you are trying to do now is remove it from there. Lint and cloth material really like to go at the back there.

What to Avoid

• Do not use compressed air
• Do not use metal objects
• Do not use a toothpick, as it might be too hard and damage the port
• Make sure the paper is dry

A Bonus Tip for Wet Ports

If the USB-C port is getting wet or goes in water, this is a great way to dry it faster. The paper helps the phone dry faster.

Does This Work with Lightning Ports

This will work with USB-C ports and lightning ports. For lightning, you do not really need to be careful with the middle part because the middle part does not exist. The contacts are on the edge. But still use the same method. Use a piece of paper folded like this to scrape the bottom of the port.
