Disable iPhone eSIM Instead of Deleting

iPhone: How to Disable eSIM Instead of Deleting It.

Learn how to disable an eSIM on your iPhone without deleting it. I show you the steps to turn off your eSIM plan temporarily. This is useful if you want to stop using a line but keep it on your phone for future use.

You can also disable the physical SIM card in your phone. That means you can turn off the SIM card without removing the SIM from your iPhone.

I’m showing you this on iOS 26 Beta 7 on an iPhone 16 Pro Max Titanium Black 256 GB, Global model A3296 – MYWV3ZD/A.

Why You Might Want to Disable an eSIM

If you have more than one SIM card on your iPhone, or multiple eSIM cards, you will see the signal for each SIM card in your settings. It is a nice option because it shows you the signal for each line.

If you have an eSIM you don’t need right now, or you want to switch to another eSIM, you can turn it off. You don’t have to remove it. You don’t have to delete the eSIM. It is really easy to turn off an eSIM and keep it for later.

How to Disable an eSIM on Your iPhone

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Cellular.
  3. Here you will see the SIM cards that you have.
  4. Find the eSIM line you want to turn off.
  5. Toggle the line off.

That’s it. The eSIM is now disabled but still installed on your phone.

What Happens When You Disable a Line

When you turn off a line, the default settings change. For example, if you had iMessage and FaceTime on that SIM card, the defaults change.

The default voice line will switch to your primary line. Now there is only one line active. The primary line is on, and the secondary eSIM is off. All the options are normal.

You could also turn off the primary line, but then you would have no signal at all.

How to Disable the Physical SIM Card Too

You can also turn off the physical SIM card from the same settings. Here is how:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Cellular.
  3. Find the physical SIM card.
  4. Toggle the line off.

Now things are much simpler in the cellular plan. If you want to have the SIM card completely disabled so it is not working, this is what you do.

When both lines are off, the phone shows No SIM. You will not receive any calls. This is also an option if you want to make sure there are no calls received on your iPhone temporarily or permanently.

You will still see the physical SIM and the eSIM in the settings, and you can always re-enable them.

How to Re-Enable Your eSIM or SIM Card

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Tap on Cellular.
  3. Find the line you want to turn back on.
  4. Toggle the line on.

The phone will get the signal from the eSIM again. If you enable the second one too, they are both back to working.

What Happens to Calls, Texts, and Data When a Line Is Off

When you turn off a number in cellular settings, you can continue to use it with iMessage and FaceTime. But standard phone calls, text messages, and data usage are not available while this number is turned off.

So you can simply turn it off. You will have only one signal bar, and it will be like there was no second card and no eSIM at all. You can always re-enable it later if you want to.

When to Delete an eSIM Instead of Disabling It

If it is a temporary service and you might re-enable it later, just disable it. But if it is a service you might never need again, for example if you changed your number, then you can delete the eSIM completely.

How to Delete an eSIM

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Cellular.
  3. Tap on the SIM card that is off.
  4. Choose Delete eSIM if you want to.

But I recommend not to delete it if you might use it in the future. If you will use it again, just keep it disabled and re-enable it later.

A Note About the Physical SIM Card

The physical SIM card cannot be deleted. You can take it out of the phone if you want to. But even if the physical SIM is inserted, you can still turn it off from the iPhone settings in the cellular settings.

Quick Recap

  • To disable an eSIM or physical SIM, go to Settings, then Cellular, then toggle the line off.
  • Disabling keeps the eSIM installed so you don’t have to scan a QR code again later.
  • When a line is off, you can still use iMessage and FaceTime with that number, but not calls, texts, or data.
  • To delete an eSIM permanently, go to Settings, then Cellular, tap the SIM card, and choose Delete eSIM.
  • Only delete if you are sure you will not need that eSIM again.
