Learn how to disable or remove AI Overview from your Google Search results. If you prefer traditional search results without AI-generated summaries, I’ll show you the steps to adjust your settings.
Learn how to turn off Google AI Overview or disable AI-generated answers in search. In this post, I explain how to manage these settings and get cleaner search results. While Google does not offer a direct toggle to remove AI Overview completely, I show you workarounds that can help minimize its appearance.
What Is Google AI Overview
You may have noticed recently that when you go to Google and make a search, the results include an AI Overview. This is a section at the top of the search results that gives you a summary of what you might need.
The AI Overview pulls information from multiple websites and summarizes it for you. It also includes links to the sources so you can read more about each one. This feature shows up in any browser on any device – computer, iPhone, or Android.
For some searches, this can be useful. For others, you might just want to see the regular search results without the AI summary.
The Problem: No Official Toggle to Turn It Off
Google does not currently offer a simple on-off switch for AI Overviews. You cannot go into your Google account settings and flip a toggle to disable them. There is no official setting for this yet.
That means you need a workaround. The good news is that a simple workaround exists and it works right now.
The Simple Workaround: Add -AI to Your Search
The easiest way to remove AI Overview from your Google search results is to add a specific term to your search query. Here is how it works:
- Type your normal search into Google
- At the end of your search, add a space and then type: -AI
- Press Enter or tap Search
The minus sign tells Google to exclude results that contain “AI.” Since the AI Overview section is labeled with AI, Google removes that section from your results.
Example
Let us say you search for “how to eat pistachios.” Normally, Google shows an AI Overview at the top of the results.
Instead, search for: how to eat pistachios -AI
Now Google shows you regular search results. You will see videos, normal websites, and everything as it should be without the AI summary.
Another Example
Search for: how to replace memory modules RAM on a computer -AI
Without the -AI, Google shows an AI Overview with summarized information. With the -AI, you get straight to the actual website results.
What You Will See After Adding -AI
When you use the -AI trick, the AI Overview section disappears. You will still see regular Google search results. The top results may have their own small summaries pulled from the websites themselves. Those are normal search snippets, not the AI-generated overview.
The difference is clear. The large AI Overview box with the purple or blue highlights is gone. You get straight to the list of websites, videos, and other normal search results.
Does This Work on All Devices and Browsers
Yes, this works everywhere. You can use it on:
- A computer (Windows or Mac)
- An Android phone
- An iPhone
- Any browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, or others)
The -AI trick works directly with Google’s search engine. It does not matter what device or browser you use.
Is This a Permanent Solution
This is a workaround, not an official setting. You have to add -AI to every search where you want to remove the AI Overview. It does not save as a preference.
Many people hope that Google will eventually add a real setting. You might be able to set it once in your Google account to exclude AI summaries by default. But for now, this is the best option available.
Are There Other Ways to Remove AI Overviews
Some browser extensions claim to remove AI Overviews from Google search results. These can work, but they require installing extra software. The -AI method requires nothing. It works immediately without any installation.
If you prefer not to type -AI every time, you could bookmark a Google search URL with -AI built in. But for most people, just typing the extra three characters at the end of a search is the fastest method.
What About the Web Filter
Some users have noticed that switching to the “Web” filter in Google search removes AI Overviews. The Web filter shows only regular website links. However, this also removes other useful features like image results, news, and videos. The -AI method keeps all normal search features while only removing the AI Overview.
Will This Always Work
Google could change how its search engine works at any time. The -AI trick works as of now. If Google changes something, this method might stop working. But for the time being, this is a reliable way to get cleaner search results.
Final Thoughts
Learn how to remove AI Overview from Google Search by adding -AI to the end of your search. This simple trick works on any device and any browser. No settings to change. No extensions to install.
Type your search normally, add a space, then type -AI. Press search. The AI Overview disappears and you see regular results.
If you want a more permanent solution, let Google know you want an official toggle. For now, this quick workaround does the job. Thanks for reading. I hope this helps you see Google Search the way you want it.
