How to Change Your Android Wi-Fi Hotspot Password.

Learn how to update your hotspot password to keep your connection secure and prevent unauthorized devices from using your data.

If you have been using the same hotspot password for a while, or if you want to make it stronger, changing it is easy. A good password helps keep other people from connecting to your hotspot and using up your mobile data.

This guide uses a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 15. The steps are very similar on most Android phones, including Samsung, Google Pixel, and other brands.

What Is a Wi-Fi Hotspot?

A Wi-Fi hotspot lets you share your phone’s mobile data connection with other devices like laptops, tablets, or other phones. The other devices connect to your phone just like they would connect to any Wi-Fi network.

The password is what keeps strangers from connecting. If your password is weak or you have never changed it, someone nearby could connect and use your data.

How to Find Your Hotspot Settings

There are two ways to get to the hotspot settings on your Android phone.

Method 1 – From Quick Settings:

· Swipe down from the top of your screen once to see notifications
· Swipe down a second time to see the full Quick Settings menu
· Look for the Hotspot icon (looks like half circles or a Wi-Fi symbol with a dot)
· If you do not see it, tap the pencil or edit button to add it
· Long press on the Hotspot icon to go directly to settings

Method 2 – From Settings:

· Open the Settings app
· Tap on Network and internet (on some phones this is called Connections)
· Tap on Hotspot and tethering
· Tap on Portable hotspot

Either method takes you to the same place.

How to Change the Hotspot Password

Once you are in the portable hotspot settings, follow these steps:

· Look for Hotspot password or Password
· Tap on it
· Type your new password
· Tap Save or OK

That is all there is to it. Your hotspot now has a new password.

How to Choose a Strong Password

A good password helps keep your hotspot secure. Here are some tips:

· Make it at least 8-12 characters long
· Use a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters
· Include one or two numbers
· Add a special character like ! ? . or ,
· Consider using a short sentence or a few random words together

For example, instead of something simple like “”password123″”, try something like “”Blue_Horse_Coffee_82″” or “”MyHotspot!IsSecure9″”.

Avoid using easy-to-guess information like your name, phone number, or birth year.

Other Hotspot Settings You Can Change

While you are in the hotspot settings, you may also want to adjust these options:

Hotspot name (SSID): This is what other devices see when they scan for Wi-Fi networks. You can change it to anything you like.

Security: Make sure this is set to WPA2 or WPA2/WPA3 Personal. Never set it to None or Open, because that means anyone can connect without a password.

Turn off hotspot automatically: This setting turns off your hotspot after a set time with no devices connected. On many phones you can set it to turn off after 5, 10, or 30 minutes. This saves battery.

AP band: You can choose between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. 2.4 GHz works better over longer distances and through walls. 5 GHz is faster but does not go as far.

How to Share Your New Password

If you have a long or complicated password, typing it into another device can be annoying. Instead, use the QR code feature.

Here is how to share your hotspot password with a QR code:

· Go to your hotspot settings
· Look for QR code (often near the password section)
· Tap it to show the code
· Have the other person scan the code with their phone’s camera

Most Android phones and iPhones can scan a QR code to join a Wi-Fi network automatically. No typing required.

A Final Reminder

Turn off your hotspot when you are not using it. Keeping it on drains your battery and leaves your connection open for others to try connecting. Even with a good password, it is better to just turn it off until you need it.
