Change File Names on Samsung Android

Samsung Galaxy Android Phone

How to Change File Names on Samsung Android Devices.

Learn how to rename files on your Samsung Galaxy phone. It’s a quick way to keep photos, documents, and downloads organized so you can actually find them later.

If you have a Samsung Galaxy S23, S24, S25, or an older model, the steps are basically the same. I’ll show you how to do this using a file manager app on Android 14 with OneUI 6.1.

Why rename files on your phone?

When you download or create files, they often get random or auto-generated names like “Screenshot_20250426_143728.jpg.” That’s not very helpful when you’re searching for something important later.

Renaming files lets you:

  • Find important files faster
  • Use meaningful names that make sense to you
  • Avoid long, messy file names before uploading somewhere

What you need

Just the built-in file manager app on your Samsung phone. You can also use Files by Google or any other file manager from the Galaxy Store or Play Store. The process is nearly identical.

How to rename a file step by step

Here are the steps using a Samsung Galaxy device:

Step 1: Open your file manager app
Find and tap the “My Files” app on your Samsung phone. It’s usually in the Samsung folder or your app drawer.

Step 2: Navigate to where your file is stored

  • For downloads: Tap “Downloads”
  • For photos or screenshots: Tap “Internal storage” then “DCIM” then “Screenshots”
  • For documents: Tap “Documents” or “Internal storage” then “Documents”

Step 3: Locate the specific file
Scroll or search until you find the file you want to rename.

Step 4: Long press on the file
Press and hold your finger on the file for about one second until it gets highlighted.

Step 5: Tap the three-dot menu
Look for the three vertical dots (?) usually in the top right or bottom corner of your screen.

Step 6: Select “Rename”
A small window will pop up where you can edit the file name.

Step 7: Type the new name
Use the text box to delete the old name and write what you want. Keep it under 50 characters if possible – some systems don’t like super long names.

Step 8: Save your changes
Tap “OK” or “Rename” to finish. Your file now has its new name.

Renaming from different views

Grid view vs List view

  • Grid view shows files as thumbnails in a grid. After renaming, you might not see the full name easily.
  • List view shows files in a vertical list with full names. This makes it easier to confirm your rename worked.

To switch views: Look for a small icon in your file manager (usually two squares for grid, three lines for list).

What about file extensions?

A file extension is the part after the dot at the end of a file name – like .jpg, .pdf, .mp4, or .docx.

Important tip: When you rename a file, do NOT change or delete the part after the dot. That three or four letter code tells your phone what kind of file it is.

Examples of correct renaming:

  • screenshot_2025.jpg ? vacation_photo.jpg (kept .jpg)
  • document.pdf ? my_resume.pdf (kept .pdf)

Wrong way:

  • screenshot_2025.jpg ? vacation_photo (no extension – phone won’t know how to open it)
  • document.pdf ? my_resume.txt (wrong extension – file may not open)

Most file managers automatically select only the name part and leave the extension alone. Just double-check before saving.

Common problems and how to fix them

File won’t rename
This usually happens if:

  • The file is currently open or in use by another app
  • You don’t have permission to modify that file
  • The file is from a read-only folder (like system files)

Try closing all apps first, then try again. If it’s a downloaded file, you should always be able to rename it.

New name doesn’t show up right away
Try switching from grid view to list view. Sometimes the preview takes a second to update. You can also close and reopen the folder.

Name is too long
Keep file names under about 50 characters. Very long names can cause problems when you try to copy, share, or upload files.

How to find files before renaming them

If you can’t remember where a file is saved:

Method 1: Use the search bar
Nearly every file manager has a magnifying glass icon at the top. Type part of the file name or what kind of file it is (like “PDF” or “video”).

Method 2: Check common folders

  • DCIM ? All camera photos and screenshots
  • Downloads ? Everything you’ve downloaded from the internet
  • Documents ? PDFs, Word files, text files, spreadsheets
  • Music ? Audio files
  • Movies ? Video files

Method 3: Look at Recent Files
Many file managers have a “Recent” section right on the home screen. Your most recently added or changed files show up there.

Does this work on all Samsung Galaxy phones?

Yes. This process works on:

  • Samsung Galaxy S23, S24, S25 series
  • Samsung Galaxy A series
  • Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series
  • Samsung Galaxy Note series
  • Basically any Samsung phone running Android

The steps are nearly identical whether you’re using Android 13, 14, or 15 and any recent version of OneUI.

Quick summary

To rename a file on your Samsung phone:

  1. Open My Files (or any file manager app)
  2. Find your file
  3. Long press on it
  4. Tap the three dots (?)
  5. Choose Rename
  6. Type the new name (keep it short and don’t change the file extension)
  7. Tap OK

That’s it. Your file now has a name that actually makes sense. You can go back and rename it again anytime you want.

If you have an important file, giving it a clear, meaningful name means you’ll actually find it when you need it later.
