How to Disable NFC on Samsung Android Phones.

Learn how to turn off NFC on your Samsung phone to save battery or for security reasons.

NFC stands for Near Field Communication. It is the feature that lets you tap your phone on a payment terminal to pay for things. It is also used for sharing data between phones. But you might want to turn it off if you never use it, want to save battery, or just prefer not to have it on all the time.

This guide uses a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra running Android 14 with OneUI 6.1. The steps are very similar on most other Samsung Galaxy phones.

What Is NFC Used For?

NFC does a few useful things on your phone:

· Contactless payments through Google Wallet, Samsung Pay, or your bank’s app
· Quick pairing with Bluetooth devices like headphones or speakers
· Sharing photos or files by tapping two phones together
· Reading NFC tags on posters or products

If you do not use any of these features, leaving NFC on is not doing anything for you. It may still use a tiny amount of battery.

How to Disable NFC in Settings

This is the most direct way to turn off NFC completely.

Here is how to do it:

· Open the Settings app on your phone
· Tap on Connections
· Look for NFC and contactless payments
· Tap the toggle switch to turn it off

That is it. NFC is now disabled. Tap to pay will not work until you turn it back on.

How to Disable NFC from Quick Settings

This is the fastest way to toggle NFC on and off. You can do it without opening the Settings app.

Here is how to do it:

· Swipe down from the top of your screen once to see the notification panel
· Swipe down a second time to see the full Quick Settings menu
· Look for the NFC icon (it looks like a small N with waves)
· If you do not see it, swipe left or right to find it on another page
· Tap the NFC icon to turn it off (it will turn gray when disabled)
· Tap it again to turn it back on

If you cannot find the NFC icon in Quick Settings:

· Swipe down twice to open the full Quick Settings menu
· Tap the pencil or edit button (usually at the top or bottom)
· Find NFC in the list of available buttons
· Drag it up to your active Quick Settings panel
· Tap Save or Done

Why Would You Want to Disable NFC?

Here are some common reasons:

· You never use contactless payments or data sharing
· You want to save a small amount of battery life
· You prefer to turn it on only when you need it for security peace of mind
· Your phone keeps beeping near payment terminals or NFC tags by accident

How to Turn NFC Back On

Turning NFC back on is just as easy. Use either method above – the toggle in Settings or the icon in Quick Settings. Tap it once and it is enabled again. Contactless payments will work right away.

A Note About Default Payment Apps

When NFC is on, your phone needs to know which app to use for payments. On Samsung phones, you can choose your default under the same NFC and contactless payments menu. Google Wallet (formerly Google Pay) is a popular choice, but you can also use Samsung Pay or your bank’s own app if it supports NFC.

You do not need to worry about any of this if NFC is turned off. The whole system is simply disabled.
