How to Enable and Secure In-App Purchases on Android.
Learn how to enable in-app purchases on your Android device to allow apps to charge you for extra content. If you want to allow apps to make purchases, I show you how to make in-app purchases easier while also keeping them secure.
I am showing you on a Sony Xperia 1 V running Android 15. These steps work on Samsung, Google Pixel, and other Android devices. The process uses the Google Play Store settings.
In this guide, you will learn how to set up fingerprint verification for purchases in the Google Play Store. This works for games and apps that offer extra content or subscriptions.
How to Find Purchase Verification Settings in Google Play
Here is where to go to manage your in-app purchase settings.
The steps:
- Open the Google Play Store app on your Android phone
- Tap your profile picture in the top right corner
- Tap Settings from the menu
- Scroll down and look for Purchase verification
- Tap on Purchase verification to expand the options
How to Enable Fingerprint Verification for Purchases
Enabling fingerprint verification makes it much easier to confirm a payment. Instead of typing your Google account password every time, you just use your fingerprint.
Here is what to do:
- Go to Play Store > Profile picture > Settings > Purchase verification
- Look for Biometric verification
- Tap the toggle to turn it on
- Confirm with your fingerprint when prompted
After you enable this, any in-app purchase will ask for your fingerprint instead of your Google account password.
What to Know About Fingerprint Verification
There is an important trade-off to understand.
Here are the pros and cons:
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Faster and easier to confirm purchases | Easier to confirm a purchase by mistake |
| Uses the same fingerprint you already use to unlock your phone | Someone could hold your phone to your finger while you are not paying attention |
| More convenient than typing a long password | If you share your phone, others might make purchases without your permission |
How to Set Verification Frequency
You can also control how often Google asks for verification.
Here are your options:
- Always – Asks for verification (password or fingerprint) for every single purchase. This is the most secure option.
- Every 30 minutes – Asks for verification once, then allows more purchases without asking again for the next 30 minutes
- Never – Does not ask for verification at all. Not recommended, especially if you share your phone.
I suggest keeping the verification frequency set to Always. This makes sure every purchase is approved by you.
Why You Might Want to Disable Fingerprint Verification
If you want to make it harder to accidentally buy something, you can turn fingerprint verification off. When it is off, the Play Store will ask for your Google account password instead. This is slower and more annoying, but it makes accidental purchases less likely.
However, there is a risk. If someone else knows your Google account password, they could make purchases without your permission even if you do not have your phone. Enabling fingerprint verification means the person needs your physical fingerprint, not just a password they might have guessed or stolen.
How to Secure In-App Purchases If You Share Your Phone with Kids
If your children use your phone, in-app purchases can lead to unexpected bills. Here is how to protect yourself.
Use these settings:
- Turn on biometric verification (fingerprint)
- Set verification frequency to Always
- Do not save your Google account password on the device
- Do not let your child use your phone while you are asleep or not paying attention
You can also use Google Play’s parental controls for extra security. To find them:
- Open Play Store
- Tap your profile picture
- Tap Settings
- Tap Family
- Tap Parental controls
Quick Summary
Here is how to enable and secure in-app purchases on Android:
To turn on fingerprint verification:
- Open Google Play Store
- Tap your profile picture
- Tap Settings
- Tap Purchase verification
- Turn on Biometric verification
To set verification frequency:
- Go to the same Purchase verification menu
- Tap Verification frequency
- Select Always for maximum security
Final Tip
Think about your situation before choosing your settings. If you live alone and do not share your phone, fingerprint verification is convenient and safe. If you share your phone with kids or other people, set verification to Always and do not turn on biometric verification unless you trust them completely. There is a balance between convenience and security. The more steps required to make a purchase, the less likely an accidental or unwanted purchase will happen.
