How to Make App Icons Smaller on Samsung Android Devices.
Learn how to resize app icons on your Samsung phone so you can fit more apps on your home screen.
If your home screen feels too busy or the icons look too big, you can make them smaller. This gives you more space to add extra apps without scrolling to another screen. You get to choose if you prefer big, easy-to-tap icons or smaller ones that let you see more at once.
This guide uses a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra running Android 14 with OneUI 6.1. The steps are very similar on most other Samsung Galaxy phones.
Change the Home Screen Grid Size
The grid is how many rows and columns of icons fit on your screen. A larger grid means smaller icons but more icons per screen. A smaller grid means bigger icons but fewer icons.
Here is how to make icons smaller:
· Long press on an empty area of your home screen (not on an app icon)
· Tap on Settings at the bottom right of the screen
· Look for Home screen grid
· Tap on it and pick a larger grid size
What the grid numbers mean:
· 4×4 means 4 columns and 4 rows of icons (larger icons, fewer icons per screen)
· 5×5 means 5 columns and 5 rows of icons (smaller icons, more icons per screen)
· 5×6 means 5 columns and 6 rows of icons (even smaller icons, even more icons per screen)
When you pick a larger grid number, your icons will get noticeably smaller. The text under each icon also gets smaller.
Change the Apps Screen Grid Too
Your Samsung phone has two different screens that show apps. The home screen holds your favorite apps. The apps screen (sometimes called the app drawer) holds all your apps when you swipe up.
You can adjust both screens separately if you want.
Here is how to change the apps screen grid:
· Long press on an empty area of your home screen
· Tap on Settings
· Look for Apps screen grid
· Tap on it and pick the same grid size you chose for your home screen
It usually looks best when both screens use the same grid size. This way icons stay the same size when you swipe between screens.
What About Folder Icons?
When you put apps inside a folder, those folder icons also get smaller when you increase the grid size. They adjust automatically. You do not need to do anything extra.
Which Grid Size Should You Pick?
It depends on how you like to use your phone.
Pick a larger grid (like 5×5 or 5×6) if:
· You want to fit more apps on one screen
· You do not mind smaller icons
· You like having everything visible without swiping between home screens
Pick a smaller grid (like 4×4 or 4×5) if:
· You want big, easy-to-tap icons
· You have trouble seeing smaller icons
· You do not need many apps on your home screen
A Note About Limits
The grid size option only goes so large. Once you pick the largest grid number available (like 5×6), you cannot make the icons any smaller using this method. The grid size has a maximum limit based on your phone model and software version.
If you want icons even smaller than that, you may need to look into display size settings or try a different launcher app from the Play Store.
Try Different Sizes
The good news is you can change the grid size as many times as you want. Try a few different options like 4×4, 5×5, and 5×6. Spend a day with each one and see which layout feels best for your eyes and your daily use.
