Motorola Walkie Talkies – T42 vs T92 H2O vs T82 Extreme – Which One Should You Get?
Today I show you a few walkie-talkies that I have been thinking about buying. I am not sure if it is really a waste of money. It probably is, because we all use mobile phones now for calls and internet chat messages.
But walkie-talkies are pretty fun. You can talk to each other when you go on a trip, in the forest, or by the sea.
I looked at three Motorola models: the T42, the T92 H2O, and the T82 Extreme. Here is what I found.
The Most Important Thing – No License Required
All of these walkie-talkies are PMR446 radios. That means you do not need a license to use them.
They have a transmission power limit of 0.5 watts. This is the maximum allowed for license-free use in Europe. You cannot get more power than this without getting a ham radio amateur radio license.
So all three models have the same transmission power. They cannot be stronger than 0.5 watts by law.
Motorola T42 – The Budget Option
The T42 is the most compact model. It looks very small and portable.
Price: About 50 Euros
This is a good entry-level option if you are not sure how much you will use walkie-talkies. If you buy the cheaper ones, you do not waste much money if they sit in a drawer.
Motorola T92 H2O – The Waterproof Option
This model is more advanced and more expensive. It is marketed for fishing.
Key features:
- Waterproof (H2O in the name means water)
- Built-in flashlight
- Comes with accessories like a whistle
The flashlight is actually pretty useful. You always have a light with you without using your phone.
The size is a bit big on this model. But if you go fishing or spend time near water, the waterproofing is a big plus.
There seem to be two versions of the T92 H2O – a newer one and an older one. I am not sure what the difference is between them.
Motorola T82 Extreme – The Outdoor Adventure Option
This model is a bit more expensive than the T92.
It is marketed for:
- Sports
- Hiking
- Mountain climbing
- Fishing
The box shows lots of accessories and pictures so you know what is inside. This seems like the premium option in the lineup.
What Is the Same on All Three Models
Because of the 0.5 watt legal limit, all three have:
- The same transmission power
- The same frequency range (PMR446)
- No license required
You cannot get a more powerful walkie-talkie without getting a ham radio license.
What Is Different
The differences come down to:
- Build quality
- Sound quality (how you hear through the speaker)
- Waterproofing (T92 is waterproof, others may not be)
- Flashlight (T92 has one built-in)
- Accessories included
- Size and portability (T42 is most compact)
- Price
Do You Really Need Walkie-Talkies?
Here is the honest truth. You can just use your mobile phone. You can call people or use chat apps through the internet.
But walkie-talkies are fun. They work without phone signal. You do not need to dial numbers. You just press a button and talk.
My Thinking on Which to Buy
If you think you will use them a lot – buy the more expensive ones like the T82 Extreme or T92 H2O. The sound quality will be better. They will last longer.
If you just want to try them out or use them occasionally – buy the cheaper T42. It costs about 50 Euros. If you do not use them much, it is not a big loss.
The T92 H2O makes sense if you need waterproofing for fishing or wet conditions. The built-in flashlight is a nice bonus.
The T82 Extreme seems like the best all-around option for outdoor activities like hiking and sports.
Final Thoughts
All three walkie-talkies have the same power. You cannot get more than 0.5 watts without a license. So the main differences are build quality, sound quality, waterproofing, and extra features.
I hope this helps you get an idea of which walkie-talkies might be better for you.
