How to Remove Keyboard Language on Android Devices.
Learn how to delete unnecessary keyboard languages so you have fewer options to switch between and a cleaner typing experience.
If you added a language to your keyboard a while ago and no longer need it, removing it is a good idea. Fewer languages means less time spent switching back and forth. This guide works for Gboard (the Google keyboard) and most other Android keyboard apps.
This guide uses a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 15 with Gboard. The steps are very similar on most Android phones, including Samsung, Pixel, and Xiaomi devices.
Why Remove a Keyboard Language?
Here are a few reasons to clean up your keyboard languages:
· You added a language by accident
· You no longer type in that language
· You have too many languages and switching between them is annoying
· You want to free up a tiny bit of storage space
How to See Which Languages Are Installed
Before you remove anything, it helps to know what is currently on your keyboard.
Here is how to check:
· Open any app where you can type (like Messages or Notes)
· Tap on the text field to bring up the keyboard
· Look at the space bar. It may show which language is active
· Long press the space bar to see a list of all installed languages
If you see languages you do not need, you can remove them.
How to Remove a Language in Gboard
Gboard is the default keyboard on many Android phones. Here is how to remove languages from it.
Method 1 – From the keyboard itself:
· Open any app where you can type
· Tap on the text field to bring up the keyboard
· Tap the gear icon (settings) on top of the keyboard
· Tap Languages
· Tap the pencil icon (edit) at the top
· Select the language or languages you want to remove
· Tap the trash bin icon to delete them
· Tap OK or Save
Method 2 – From system settings:
· Open Settings on your phone
· Tap System (on some phones this is called General management)
· Tap Languages and input
· Tap On-screen keyboard then Gboard
· Tap Languages
· Tap the pencil icon
· Select the languages to remove
· Tap the trash bin icon
Both methods work the same way. Use whichever is easier for you.
How to Remove a Language on Samsung Keyboard
If you use a Samsung phone with the Samsung Keyboard instead of Gboard, the steps are slightly different.
Here is how to remove a language on Samsung Keyboard:
· Open Settings
· Tap General management
· Tap Samsung Keyboard settings
· Tap Languages and types
· Tap Manage input languages
· Uncheck the language you want to remove
A Note About Multilingual Typing
If you remove a language, you will no longer get autocorrect or word suggestions in that language. This is fine if you do not type in that language anymore.
However, if you type in two languages that use the same alphabet (like English and Spanish), Gboard can actually handle both at the same time without switching. In that case, you do not need to remove either one. The keyboard will try to guess which language you are typing and suggest words from both.
This only works for languages that share a similar alphabet. For languages with different alphabets (like English and Russian), you still need to switch manually.
How to Rearrange Language Order
If you want to keep multiple languages but want a specific one to appear first, you can rearrange them instead of removing any.
Here is how to change the order:
· Go to Gboard settings > Languages
· Tap the pencil icon
· Drag the three lines next to each language up or down
· Tap Save or the back button
The language at the top of the list will be the default when your keyboard opens.
Quick Summary
What you want to do How to do it

Final Tip
You can always add a language back later if you change your mind. The process is just as easy as removing one. So do not worry about permanently losing anything. Just go back to Languages and tap Add keyboard.
