Learn how to set any of your cards as the primary one for contactless payments. I’ll show you the steps on a Sony Xperia 1 V running Android 15, but the process is the same on almost any Android phone.

How to Find Your Cards in Google Wallet

First, you need to open the app where all your cards are stored.

  1. Open the Google Wallet app on your phone. (If you see “Google Pay,” that’s the same app in many countries now).
  2. At the bottom of the screen, tap on the Payment tab. This shows you all the cards you’ve added.

The Steps to Set a New Default Card

Once you’re looking at your list of cards, follow these steps.

Step 1: Choose the Card You Want

Look at your list of cards. Find the one you want to set as the new default for store payments. Tap on that card to open its details.

Step 2: Find the “Set as Default” Option

Look for an option that says Set as default contactless. You might find it:

  • At the top of the card’s detail screen, often next to a star icon.
  • Or, by tapping the three-dot Menu button in the top-right corner of the card’s screen.

Tap Set as default contactless.

Step 3: Reorder Your Cards (Optional)

Google Wallet will also let you drag and drop cards to put them in any order you want. This is useful for organizing.

  1. On the main Payment tab, tap More (usually three dots or lines) and look for Rearrange cards or Card order.
  2. Press and hold the card you want to move, then drag it to the top of the list. The card at the very top usually becomes the new default automatically.

What to Do If You Add a New Card

When you add a brand new card to Google Wallet, the app will often ask you right away if you want to set it as your default. You can say yes then, or you can follow the steps above to set it as default later.

How to Keep Your Wallet Organized

Taking a minute to clean up your digital wallet is a good habit.

  • Remove Old Cards: If a card has expired or you don’t use it anymore, go to the Payment tab, tap on the old card, and look for a Remove option. This keeps your list clean and secure.
  • Check Before You Pay: When you’re ready to pay, you can double-check which card is active. Just wake up your phone (without unlocking it) and tap it near the payment terminal. The default card should appear on the screen for a second before the payment goes through.

That’s all there is to it! Now you can easily switch between cards for different types of spending, all from your phone.
