How to Change Gemini AI Assistant Voice on Android Devices.

Learn how to change the voice of the Gemini AI assistant on your Android phone. If you’re using Gemini instead of Google Assistant and want a different voice, you can pick from several options.

I’ll show you this on a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 15, but the steps are the same on Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, and most other Android phones that support Gemini.

What is Gemini?

Gemini is Google’s newer AI assistant. It’s replacing the classic Google Assistant on many newer Android phones. Gemini can answer questions, help with tasks, and have more natural conversations. Like Google Assistant, it speaks back to you with a voice you can customize.

How to change Gemini voice step by step

Step 1: Open the Gemini app
Find the Gemini app on your home screen or in your app drawer. Tap to open it. The icon looks like a sparkle or star shape.

If you don’t have the Gemini app, you might be using Google Assistant instead. Check your phone’s settings to see which assistant is active.

Step 2: Tap your profile picture
Look at the top right corner of the Gemini app screen. You’ll see your Google account profile picture or initial. Tap on it.

Step 3: Tap Settings
A menu will drop down. Tap “”Settings”” to open the Gemini settings page.

Step 4: Find the Voice option
Scroll through the settings options. Look for “”Voice”” or “”Voice settings.”” Tap it.

Step 5: Listen to voice samples
You’ll see a list of available voices. Each voice has a name or description. Tap on any voice to hear a sample. Gemini will speak a sentence so you can hear what that voice sounds like.

The voice samples might say something like:

  • “”I’m ready to be your voice. If you like what you hear, choose me.””
  • “”Feel free to keep exploring until you find the perfect voice.””
  • “”I’ll be here whenever you’re ready to talk.””

Step 6: Pick your favorite
Once you find a voice you like, just tap on it to select it. The change saves automatically. There’s no separate save button.

Step 7: Test your new voice
Close settings and ask Gemini a question. Say “”Hey Google”” (if wake word is enabled) or tap the microphone icon. Try something simple like: “”What’s the weather today?”” or “”Tell me a joke.”” You’ll hear your new voice speaking the answer.

What voice options does Gemini have?

Gemini currently has fewer voice options than the classic Google Assistant. You’ll typically see:

  • Several different voices (usually 4-8 options)
  • Mix of voices that sound more masculine or more feminine
  • Different speaking styles and tones

Unlike Google Assistant, Gemini does not currently offer different accent options (like UK or Australian English) in the same way. The voices are mostly standard US English.

Gemini voice vs Google Assistant voice

This is important to understand. If you’re using Gemini, changing the voice in the Gemini settings only affects Gemini. It does NOT change Google Assistant’s voice if you still use both.

  • Gemini voice settings – Change how Gemini sounds when you talk to it
  • Google Assistant voice settings – Separate settings in the Google app

If you switch between both assistants, you’ll need to set voices in each place.

How to tell if you’re using Gemini or Google Assistant

Not sure which assistant your phone is using? Here’s how to check:

Method 1: Ask it
Activate your assistant and ask: “”What assistant are you?”” It will tell you.

Method 2: Check in Settings

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Google
  3. Look for “”Gemini”” or “”Google Assistant””
  4. The one that appears is your current assistant

Method 3: Look at the app
If you have a Gemini app on your phone, you’re likely using Gemini. If you don’t, you’re probably using Google Assistant.

Why can’t I find the voice option in Gemini?

If you don’t see a “”Voice”” option in Gemini settings, here are possible reasons:

Region restrictions – Voice customization might not be available in all countries yet. Google rolls out features gradually.

Language setting – Gemini voice options depend on your language. Try checking your language in Gemini settings.

Outdated app – Make sure your Gemini app is updated. Go to the Play Store and check for updates.

Not supported yet – Gemini is still new. Some features that Google Assistant has aren’t available in Gemini yet. Voice customization is gradually rolling out.

Can I change Gemini’s wake word?

No. Gemini still responds to “”Hey Google”” or “”OK Google”” – the same wake words as Google Assistant. You cannot change it to a different phrase like “”Hey Gemini”” on most phones.

Does changing Gemini voice affect other apps?

No. The Gemini voice setting only affects how Gemini sounds when you talk to it in the Gemini app or through the assistant. It does NOT change:

  • Google Maps navigation voice
  • Your phone’s text-to-speech settings
  • Other apps that use voice output
  • Google Assistant (if you still have it)

How to switch back to Google Assistant from Gemini

If you prefer Google Assistant and want more voice options:

Step 1: Open Settings > Google

Step 2: Look for “”Gemini”” or “”Google Assistant””

Step 3: Find the option to switch assistants (often called “”Digital assistants”” or “”Default assistant””)

Step 4: Choose Google Assistant instead of Gemini

Each phone brand places these settings slightly differently. On some phones, you can have both and choose which one to use by long pressing the home button or power button.

Quick summary

To change Gemini voice on Android:

  1. Open the Gemini app
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top right corner
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Tap Voice
  5. Tap different voices to hear samples
  6. Pick the one you like – it saves automatically

To test your new voice:
Ask Gemini a question like “”What’s the weather today?”” or “”Tell me a fun fact.””

Remember: Gemini voice options are more limited than classic Google Assistant. If you want more choices (like different accents), you might prefer using Google Assistant instead. Check your phone’s assistant settings to see which one is active and to switch between them if both are available.
