How to Disable Android Notifications at Night Using the Do Not Disturb Mode.

Learn how to silence Android notifications at night so you can sleep without constant buzzing and beeping. If you’re tired of being woken up by emails, texts, or app alerts, Do Not Disturb mode is the solution.

I’ll show you this on a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 15, but the steps work on Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, and most other Android phones.

Why you should silence notifications at night

Every time your phone buzzes or makes a sound, it can disturb your sleep. Even if you don’t fully wake up, notifications can pull you out of deep sleep, making you feel tired the next day.

Common nighttime interruptions:

  • Late night emails
  • YouTube upload alerts
  • Text messages
  • App promotions
  • Game notifications

None of these are important enough to wake you up. You can check them in the morning.

What is Do Not Disturb mode?

Do Not Disturb (DND) is a feature that silences calls, alerts, and notifications when you don’t want to be bothered. Your phone stops making sounds and vibrating. But you can still use your phone normally – you just won’t hear anything.

When DND is on, you’ll see a small icon in your status bar. It looks like a circle with a line or minus sign through it (a “”do not enter”” or “”stop”” sign shape).

How to manually turn on Do Not Disturb

If you just want to silence your phone for a few hours right now:

Step 1: Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open Quick Settings

Step 2: Look for the Do Not Disturb button (icon looks like a circle with a line through it)

Step 3: Tap it to turn it on

Step 4: Tap it again to turn it off when you’re ready to receive notifications again

The better way: Set up a schedule

Manual toggling works, but you’ll forget. Setting up a schedule means DND turns on and off automatically every night.

Step 1: Open Settings
Find the Settings app on your phone. It looks like a gear icon.

Step 2: Tap on Notifications
Scroll down and tap “”Notifications.”” This is where all notification settings live.

Step 3: Tap on Do Not Disturb
You’ll see “”Do Not Disturb”” or “”Do not disturb”” as an option. Tap it.

Step 4: Look for Schedules or Rules
Find “”Schedules”” or “”Rules.”” Tap “”Add schedule”” or the plus icon (+).

Step 5: Set your sleep hours
Choose the days and times you want DND to activate. Most people set it for:

  • Days: Every day or Monday to Friday
  • Start time: When you usually go to bed (like 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM)
  • End time: When you wake up (like 7:00 AM or 8:00 AM)

Step 6: Save the schedule
Tap “”Save”” or “”Done.”” Your schedule is now active.

Now your phone will automatically silence all notifications every night during those hours.

What breaks through Do Not Disturb?

By default, DND blocks almost everything. But you can make exceptions for things that matter.

Alarms (highly recommended)

Alarms should always work, even with DND on. Check that “”Alarms”” is set to “”Allow”” in your DND settings. You don’t want to oversleep.

Calls from specific people

You can let calls from certain contacts come through:

Step 1: In Do Not Disturb settings, look for “”People”” or “”Calls and messages””

Step 2: Choose “”Allow calls from””

Step 3: Pick options like:

  • “”Starred contacts only”” (favorites)
  • “”Any contact”” (anyone in your address book)
  • “”None”” (no calls come through)

Repeated calls

This is a great feature. If someone calls you twice within 15 minutes, that second call will ring through. Why? Because if someone calls twice in a row, it might be an emergency.

Look for “”Allow repeated calls”” or “”Second call”” and turn it on.

Specific apps

You can let certain apps send notifications even during DND:

Step 1: In Do Not Disturb settings, look for “”Apps””

Step 2: Tap “”Add app””

Step 3: Select apps that are important to you – like a baby monitor app or a security camera app

Step 4: Choose if you want sounds, vibrations, or both

Other ways to silence your phone at night

Do Not Disturb is the best option, but here are alternatives:

Use volume buttons
Press the volume down button repeatedly until your phone goes to:

  • Vibrate only – your phone vibrates but doesn’t make sounds
  • Mute – completely silent, no vibration

The problem with manual muting: You have to remember to turn the volume back up in the morning. DND schedules do this automatically.

How to know if Do Not Disturb is on

Look at the top of your screen (status bar). If you see a small circle with a line through it (looks like a stop sign), Do Not Disturb is active.

Also, when you press the volume buttons, you’ll see a message saying “”Do Not Disturb is on.””

What’s the difference between Do Not Disturb and Silent mode?

  • Do Not Disturb – Silences notifications but gives you control over exceptions (alarms, certain contacts, certain apps)
  • Silent mode (volume down to zero) – Silences everything with no exceptions. Even alarms might not make sound

For sleeping, Do Not Disturb with alarms allowed is the better choice.

Setting up a sleep schedule in Digital Wellbeing

Some Android phones have a separate “”Bedtime mode”” that combines Do Not Disturb with a dark screen and grayscale colors. To find it:

Step 1: Open Settings
Step 2: Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls
Step 3: Tap Bedtime mode
Step 4: Set your sleep and wake times
Step 5: Turn on “”Do Not Disturb”” as part of this mode

This is a more complete “”sleep mode”” that prepares your phone for bed.

Quick summary

To disable notifications at night using Do Not Disturb:

Manual method:

  1. Swipe down twice from the top of your screen
  2. Tap the Do Not Disturb button

Scheduled method (better):

  1. Open Settings > Notifications
  2. Tap Do Not Disturb
  3. Tap Schedules or Rules
  4. Add a schedule for your sleep hours
  5. Set start time (bedtime) and end time (wake up)
  6. Save

Important exceptions to set:

  • Allow alarms (so you don’t oversleep)
  • Turn on repeated calls (emergencies get through)
  • Add important apps if needed

Once set up, your phone will automatically go silent every night and turn sounds back on every morning. You’ll sleep better and wake up with notifications waiting for you – not waking you up all night.
