How to Change Your Google Account Password on Android Devices.
Learn how to reset your Google password right from your Android phone. If you think someone else knows your password or you just want to update it for better security, doing this regularly is a smart habit.
Your Google password is used for Gmail, YouTube, Google Docs, Google Drive, and pretty much every Google service you use. So keeping it safe matters.
I’ll show you this on a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 15, but the steps are almost identical on Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, and any other Android phone.
Before you start
You’ll need:
- Your current Google account email address
- Your current password (if you remember it)
- Access to your phone number or recovery email (in case Google asks to verify it’s you)
If you’ve forgotten your password entirely, Google has account recovery options. But this guide covers changing your password when you already know your current one.
Why change your Google password?
Good reasons to update your password:
- You think someone else might know it
- You haven’t changed it in a long time
- You used the same password on another site that had a data breach
- You just want better security
Google also offers two-factor authentication (receiving an SMS or using an authenticator app like Google Authenticator). That’s not the focus here, but it’s worth turning on for extra protection.
How to change your Google password step by step
Step 1: Open Settings
Find the Settings app on your phone. It looks like a gear icon.
Step 2: Tap on Google
Scroll down until you see Google. Tap it. You’ll see your name and email address at the top.
Step 3: Tap Manage your Google Account
Look for the option that says “”Manage your Google Account”” or just tap on your name and email. This opens your Google account dashboard.
Step 4: Go to the Security tab
At the top of the screen, you’ll see several tabs:
- Home
- Personal info
- Data & privacy
- Security
- People & sharing
- Payments & subscriptions
Tap on Security.
Step 5: Find the Password section
Scroll down the Security page. Look for a box or section labeled “”Password.”” It will show you when you last changed your password.
Tap on Password.
Step 6: Verify it’s you
Google will ask you to confirm your identity. On most Android phones, you’ll see one of these options:
- Use your fingerprint
- Enter your phone’s passcode (PIN, pattern, or password)
- Enter your current Google password
Choose the method that works for you.
Step 7: Create a new password
You’ll see a screen where you can type a new password. Type it in the “”New password”” field. Then type it again in the “”Confirm new password”” field to make sure there are no typos.
Step 8: Review where you’ll stay signed in
Google will show you a list of devices that will stay signed in after you change your password. This is important. Look at the list carefully. Make sure every device on that list belongs to you. If you see anything suspicious, that could mean someone else has access to your account.
Step 9: Tap Change Password
Hit the blue “”Change password”” button to save your new password.
Step 10: Done
Google will confirm your password has been changed. You’ll also see that the “”Last password change”” date updates to today’s date.
What happens after you change your password
You get notifications
Google sends alerts to:
- Your Gmail inbox
- Your recovery email address (if you have one set up)
- Your phone via the Play Store app
These notifications say your password was changed. If you didn’t change it yourself, you can click a link in the email to revert the change immediately. That’s an important safety feature.
You might get signed out of some devices
Not every device stays signed in. Some apps and devices may ask you to enter your new password. This is normal. It’s Google making sure only you and your trusted devices keep access.
Your phone stays signed in
If you changed the password while already signed in on your Android phone, you usually don’t need to re-enter the new password. Your phone stays signed in automatically.
Tips for creating a strong password
A good password is hard for others to guess but easy for you to remember.
What makes a strong password:
- At least 8-12 characters
- A mix of uppercase and lowercase letters
- At least one number
- At least one symbol like ! ? . , @ # $ %
Examples of weak passwords to avoid:
- password123
- your name or birthday
- qwerty
- 12345678
Instead, try a phrase you’ll remember, like: “”BlueCoffeeTable!42″” or “”MyDogLoves2Walk#””
Or use Google’s suggested strong password – it will often offer one for you.
What if you have two-factor authentication turned on?
If you have two-step verification enabled (and you should), you might need to confirm the password change using:
- A code sent by SMS to your phone
- A code from Google Authenticator or another authenticator app
- A prompt on another device where you’re signed in
This is normal. It’s just Google double-checking that it’s really you.
What if you forgot your current password?
This guide assumes you know your current password. If you don’t, don’t worry. Google has account recovery steps:
- On the sign-in screen, tap “”Forgot password?””
- Follow the prompts. Google will ask for:
- The last password you remember (even if it’s wrong)
- Access to your recovery email
- A code sent to your phone number
- Answer the questions as best you can
For a forgotten password, the process is different and requires more verification. That’s on purpose – to keep bad guys out even if they have your phone.
How to check if your password is already compromised
Google has a feature called “”Password Checkup”” that can tell you if your password has been exposed in a data breach.
To check:
- Go to your Google Account (same steps as above)
- Tap Security
- Look for “”Password Checkup”” or go to passwords.google.com
- Follow the prompts
If Google tells you a password is compromised, change it right away.
