This guide is based on a Sony Xperia 1 V running Android 15, but the steps are very similar on most Android phones.
Finding and Using the Dial Pad
The dial pad is the gateway to calling any number you want.
Opening the Phone App
Look for the Phone app icon on your home screen or in your app drawer. It usually looks like a traditional telephone handset. Tap it to open.
Locating the Dial Pad
Once the Phone app is open, you will see a few tabs at the bottom, like Recents, Contacts, and Favorites. The tab you need is often labeled Keypad or has a dial pad icon (#). Tap it, and the familiar grid of numbers (0-9) will appear.
The Dial Pad Layout
The layout is straightforward:
- The top row has the numbers 1, 2, and 3.
- The middle row has 4, 5, and 6.
- The bottom row has 7, 8, and 9.
- The “0” is typically at the bottom center, often with a “+” sign for international calls next to it.
- You’ll also see a backspace (⌫) key to erase mistakes and a call button (usually green) to place the call.
How to Dial a Phone Number
Typing a Number Manually
- Tap the numbers on the keypad one by one to enter the full phone number.
- As you type, the number will appear in the large display bar at the top of the screen.
- Double-check the number for accuracy.
- Tap the green Call button to place the call.
Pasting a Copied Number
This is a fantastic time-saver and prevents typos.
- Copy the phone number. Long-press on a number in a text message, email, or website and select Copy.
- Open the Phone app and go to the dial pad.
- Tap once in the number display bar at the top. You should see a Paste option appear.
- Tap Paste. The copied number will fill in automatically.
- Tap the green Call button.
Making International Calls
Calling another country requires a specific format. The dial pad makes this easy with the plus sign (+).
- On the dial pad, tap and hold the “0” key. This will usually input the plus sign (+). Alternatively, there may be a dedicated “+” button.
- Enter the country code (for example, 44 for the UK, 33 for France) without any leading zeros.
- Enter the rest of the phone number, typically omitting the first “0” of the local number.
- The final number should look like: +[Country Code][Local Number].
- Tap the green Call button.
Correcting Mistakes and Using Automated Systems
Fixing Typing Errors
If you type a wrong digit, tap the backspace key (⌫) once to erase the last number entered. Keep tapping to erase more. If you need to start over, many dial pads have a clear (C or X) button, or you can simply erase the entire number with the backspace key.
Navigating Automated Menus
When you call a business and hear “Press 1 for Sales, Press 2 for Support…,” you use the dial pad to respond.
- Listen to the automated menu options.
- At the prompt, press the corresponding number on your phone’s dial pad.
- The tone will be sent, and the system will route your call. You can continue to press numbers as needed for account numbers or other options.
Saving a New Contact from the Dial Pad
After you’ve dialed a new number, it’s easy to save it for later.
- Once you’ve finished your call (or even before you dial), look at the number displayed on the screen.
- You should see an option like Add to Contacts, Save, or a person-with-a-plus icon near the number.
- Tap it. You can then choose to Create new contact or Add to existing contact.
- Fill in the name and any other details, then tap Save.
And that’s it! You now know how to use the Android dial pad to call anyone, anywhere. It’s a simple but powerful tool for everyday communication.
