Fixing Broken Hooks on a VW Polo 9N Boot Shelf.
Is the parcel shelf in your VW Polo 9N flopping down when you open the boot? This is a super common problem. The little plastic hooks that connect the shelf to the rear door often snap off. Learn how to make a quick and easy repair to get it working again.
What’s the Problem?
The boot parcel shelf (that flat cover that hides your luggage) is supposed to lift automatically when you open the boot door. It does this with two strings that have plastic hooks on the ends. These hooks attach to anchors on the shelf itself and to the rear door.
When these plastic hooks break, the strings detach. This means the shelf just sits there when you open the boot, instead of conveniently lifting out of your way. The good news is, if you still have the broken pieces, you can often fix it yourself in minutes.
The Tools You’ll Need
You don’t need much for this repair. Here’s what to grab:
- The broken plastic hook pieces.
- Super Glue Gel (Cyanoacrylate): This is the easiest and fastest option. The gel type is less messy and gives you a few seconds to position the parts.
- OR, 2-Part Epoxy: This creates a stronger, more durable bond but takes much longer to set.
- A clean cloth or paper towel.
- Some masking tape or regular tape (especially if using epoxy).
The Repair Steps
I’ll show you the steps to glue the hook back together. It’s a very straightforward process.
Step 1: Clean the Parts
First, make sure the broken surfaces of the plastic hook are clean and dry. Wipe off any dust or grease with a cloth. A good, clean surface is key for a strong bond.
Step 2: Apply the Glue
This is where you choose your method.
- For Super Glue Gel (Recommended): Apply a small drop of the gel to one of the broken surfaces. Press the two pieces together firmly and hold them for about 30-60 seconds. The bond sets quickly.
- For 2-Part Epoxy: Mix a small amount of the epoxy resin and hardener according to the package instructions. Apply it to both broken surfaces, press the parts together, and then use tape to hold them securely in place. You must let it cure without any load or stress for 24 to 48 hours for a full-strength bond.
Step 3: Reattach the String
Once the glue has set (immediately for super glue, after a day or two for epoxy), you can reattach the hook to the parcel shelf. Simply loop the string back through its anchor point on the shelf and clip or tie the hook back into place.
Super Glue vs. Epoxy: Which Should You Use?
Both methods work, but they have different pros and cons.
Super Glue Gel:
- Pros: Incredibly fast. You can fix the shelf and use it again within a couple of minutes. It’s also very easy to apply.
- Cons: The bond can be brittle. It might break again in the future, especially if there’s a lot of stress on the hook. The repair in the video was done with super glue.
2-Part Epoxy:
- Pros: Creates a much stronger, more durable, and slightly flexible bond. It’s more likely to be a permanent fix.
- Cons: The process is messy, and you have to wait at least a full day before you can use the shelf again. You also need to tape the part while it cures.
A Quick Summary
For a fast, easy fix that gets your boot shelf working today, use super glue gel. It’s the practical choice. If you want a stronger, more permanent repair and don’t mind the wait, use 2-part epoxy.
This is a simple DIY job that can save you the cost of buying a whole new parcel shelf. Just find the broken pieces, clean them up, add a dab of glue, and you’re back in business.
