Switch Between Camera Lenses on iPhone

How to Switch Between Main Camera Lenses and Change Zoom on iPhone.

Learn how to use all the cameras on your iPhone. If you have an iPhone with multiple lenses, switching between ultra-wide, wide, and telephoto cameras is very easy.

I’ll show you the steps to control your zoom and pick the right lens for your shot. I’m using iOS 26 Beta on an iPhone 16 Pro Max, but these steps work on all multi-lens iPhones including the 11 Pro, 12 Pro, 13 Pro, 14 Pro, 15 Pro, and newer models.

Which Lenses Does Your iPhone Have?

Different iPhone models have different numbers of lenses:

  • Ultra-wide (0.5x) – fits more into the frame, great for landscapes and big groups
  • Wide (1x) – the standard lens, best for most everyday photos
  • Telephoto (2x, 3x, or 5x) – zooms in closer, great for portraits and distant subjects

The exact zoom amounts depend on your iPhone model. Newer Pro models have 5x optical zoom, while older Pro models may have 2x or 3x.

How to Switch Between Lenses

There are two easy ways to change lenses and zoom on your iPhone:

Method 1: Tap the zoom buttons

  • Open the Camera app
  • Look at the bottom of the screen near the shutter button
  • Tap 0.5x for ultra-wide
  • Tap 1x for the standard wide lens
  • Tap 2x, 3x, or 5x for telephoto zoom (whichever appears on your phone)

Method 2: Pinch to zoom

  • Open the Camera app
  • Place two fingers on the screen
  • Pinch them together to zoom out
  • Spread them apart to zoom in
  • The zoom level number changes as you pinch

What Happens When You Zoom

When you zoom, your iPhone automatically switches between its physical lenses. Here’s how it works on an iPhone 16 Pro Max:

  • 0.5x – uses the ultra-wide lens
  • 1x – uses the main wide lens
  • 2x – also uses the main wide lens (digital zoom from the 1x lens)
  • 5x – switches to the telephoto lens
  • Above 5x – still uses the telephoto lens but adds digital zoom (lower quality)

You might see a small jump or shift in the image when the phone switches between lenses. That’s normal.

Which Lenses Give the Best Quality?

  • 1x and 2x – usually the best quality on any iPhone
  • 0.5x (ultra-wide) – good quality but can have some distortion at the edges
  • 5x and higher – good in good light, but lower quality than 1x, especially in dim conditions

For the sharpest photos, use 1x whenever you can. Zoom in by walking closer to your subject instead of using digital zoom if possible.

How to Use the Zoom Slider for Precise Control

If you want a specific zoom amount like 1.8x or 3.2x:

  1. Open the Camera app
  2. Tap and hold on one of the zoom buttons (0.5x, 1x, 2x, or 5x)
  3. A zoom slider appears
  4. Drag the slider left or right to get exactly the zoom you want
  5. Let go to take your photo

This gives you finer control than just tapping the preset buttons.

How to Set a Different Default Zoom Lens

On newer iPhones (iPhone 15 Pro and newer), you can change what the 1x button does:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Camera
  3. Tap Main Camera (may be called “Fusion Camera” on some models)
  4. Choose between:
  • 24mm (1x) – standard wide view
  • 28mm (1.2x) – slightly zoomed in
  • 35mm (1.5x) – more zoomed in, closer to what your eyes see

After changing this, your Camera app will show 1.2x or 1.5x as the default instead of 1x. You can still tap to switch between lenses.

How Zoom Works in Video Mode

Switching lenses and zooming works the same way in video mode. You can:

  • Tap the lens buttons (0.5x, 1x, 2x, 5x) while recording
  • Pinch to zoom while recording
  • Use the zoom slider for smooth zooming during video

On iPhone 16 models with the Camera Control button, you can also slide your finger on that button to zoom.

Step-by-Step Summary

To switch lenses:

  1. Open Camera
  2. Tap 0.5x, 1x, or 2x/3x/5x at the bottom
  3. Or pinch the screen to zoom in and out

To use the zoom slider:

  1. Open Camera
  2. Tap and hold a zoom button
  3. Drag the slider to your desired zoom
  4. Take your photo

To change the default main lens (iPhone 15 Pro and newer):

  1. Settings > Camera > Main Camera
  2. Pick 24mm (1x), 28mm (1.2x), or 35mm (1.5x)

Final Tips

  • 1x and 2x usually give the best quality
  • Ultra-wide (0.5x) fits more in the frame but can distort edges
  • Digital zoom above your phone’s maximum optical zoom reduces quality
  • Walk closer to your subject instead of zooming when you can
  • The same controls work for both photos and videos
