How to Switch From Rear Camera to Front Camera on iPhone.
Learn how to switch from the rear camera to the front selfie camera on your iPhone. If you want to take selfies or flip the camera while recording video, it only takes one tap.
I’ll show you the quickest way to change cameras in the iPhone Camera app. I’m using iOS 26 Beta on an iPhone 16 Pro Max, but this works on all iPhone models including the iPhone X, iPhone 11, iPhone 15, and newer versions.
Where Is the Camera Switch Button?
The switch button is very easy to find. Open your Camera app and look at the bottom right corner of the screen (in portrait mode) or the bottom right corner (in landscape mode). You’ll see an icon that looks like a camera with two curved arrows around it.
That’s your camera switch button. One tap flips you from rear camera to front camera. Tap again to go back.
Step-by-Step: Switch Between Rear and Front Camera
- Open the Camera app on your iPhone
- Look for the camera switch icon (camera + two curved arrows)
- Tap it once to switch to the front camera (selfie mode)
- Tap it again to switch back to the rear camera
That’s all there is to it. The switch happens instantly. This works in both Photo mode and Video mode.
Where Are the Cameras Located on Your iPhone?
- Rear cameras – the lenses on the back of your iPhone. These take higher quality photos and videos.
- Front camera – the small lens at the top of your screen, inside the Dynamic Island or notch. This is the selfie camera.
Which Camera Takes Better Quality Photos?
The rear camera takes much better quality photos than the front camera. Here’s why:
- Rear camera has larger sensors and better lenses
- Rear camera captures more detail, especially at 1x and 2x zoom
- Front camera is smaller and works best for video calls and quick selfies
If you want the best possible selfie, don’t use the front camera. Instead:
- Switch to the rear camera (main 1x lens)
- Turn your phone around so the back faces you
- Use the volume button to take the photo
- Or use the Camera Control button (on iPhone 16 models)
You won’t see yourself on the screen, but the photo quality will be much better.
Switching Cameras in Video Mode
The camera switch button works the same way when you’re recording video:
- Start recording a video
- Tap the camera switch icon while recording
- The camera flips from rear to front (or front to rear) without stopping the video
This is great for vlogging or recording videos where you want to show both what you’re seeing and your own face.
Switching Cameras in Other Apps
The same idea works in other apps that use your camera:
- FaceTime – tap the switch icon to flip between rear and front camera during a call
- Instagram – look for the same camera switch icon near the shutter button
- TikTok – the flip camera icon is usually on the right side of the screen
- Zoom or Google Meet – look for a “Switch Camera” button in the controls
Step-by-Step Summary
- Open the Camera app
- Find the switch icon (camera with two arrows)
- Tap to go to front camera
- Tap again to go back to rear camera
- Works in photo mode, video mode, and while recording
Final Tips
- The front camera is best for selfies and video calls
- The rear camera is best for quality photos and videos
- For the highest quality selfie, turn the phone around and use the rear camera
- You can switch cameras while recording video without stopping
