Make iPhone Use 5G Only

How to Make iPhone to Use 5G Only and Use 5G All the Time.

Learn how to make your iPhone use 5G networks whenever available. If you want maximum speed instead of battery savings, changing one setting does the trick.

I’ll show you the steps to force 5G-only mode on compatible iPhone models. I’m using iOS 26 Beta on an iPhone 16 Pro Max, but this works on iPhone 12 and newer models running iOS 14 or later.

5G Auto vs 5G On – What’s the Difference?

Your iPhone has two main 5G settings:

5G Auto (default setting)

  • Uses 5G only when it improves performance
  • Switches to LTE when 5G would drain too much battery
  • Best balance of speed and battery life
  • What most people should use day to day

5G On

  • Uses 5G whenever it’s available
  • Never switches to LTE to save battery
  • Gives you maximum possible speed at all times
  • Uses more battery power

Step-by-Step: Change to 5G Only Mode

Follow these steps to force your iPhone to use 5G whenever available:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Cellular (or “Mobile Service” depending on your region)
  3. Tap Cellular Data Options
  4. Tap Voice & Data
  5. Select 5G On instead of 5G Auto

That’s it. Your iPhone will now use 5G whenever a 5G network is in range.

What Happens When 5G Isn’t Available?

If you set your iPhone to 5G On and you move outside of 5G coverage, your phone will automatically fall back to LTE (4G). You won’t lose your connection. The setting means “use 5G when available” – not “only 5G ever.”

The phone still knows how to use LTE as a backup. You just won’t switch to LTE to save battery like you would in 5G Auto mode.

Which iPhone Models Support This?

This setting works on all 5G-capable iPhones:

  • iPhone 12 series (all models)
  • iPhone 13 series (all models)
  • iPhone 14 series (all models)
  • iPhone 15 series (all models)
  • iPhone 16 series (all models)
  • iPhone SE (3rd generation)

If you have an older iPhone without 5G, this setting won’t appear.

Does This Work on All Carriers?

Most carriers support both 5G Auto and 5G On options, including:

  • T-Mobile
  • AT&T
  • Verizon
  • Most other carriers with 5G networks

Some carriers may hide the 5G On option or label it differently. If you don’t see “5G On” in the menu, your carrier may not allow manual 5G control. In that case, your iPhone stays on 5G Auto.

How to Check If You’re Connected to 5G

After changing the setting, you can verify your connection:

  1. Look at the status bar at the top of your iPhone screen
  2. You should see 5G instead of LTE or 5G Auto
  3. You can also go back to Settings > Cellular – it will show your current network type

The Battery Life Trade-Off

Forcing 5G On does use more battery than 5G Auto. Here’s why:

  • 5G radios use more power than LTE radios
  • Your phone stays on 5G even when you’re just checking email or texting
  • In areas with weak 5G signals, your phone works harder to maintain the connection

When to use 5G On:

  • You need maximum speed for downloads or uploads
  • You’re live streaming or gaming on cellular
  • Your phone is plugged into power

When to use 5G Auto:

  • Normal daily use
  • When battery life matters more than peak speed
  • Most of the time, for most people

How to Switch Back to 5G Auto

If you notice your battery draining faster than usual:

  1. Go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data
  2. Select 5G Auto
  3. Your iPhone goes back to balancing speed and battery life

Step-by-Step Summary

  1. Settings > Cellular
  2. Cellular Data Options
  3. Voice & Data
  4. Select 5G On (instead of 5G Auto)
  5. Exit Settings – your iPhone now uses 5G whenever available

Final Tips

  • 5G On gives you maximum speed but uses more battery
  • 5G Auto is better for most daily use
  • Your phone still uses LTE as a backup when 5G isn’t available
  • This setting only works on iPhone 12 and newer
  • Some carriers may not offer the 5G On option
