I’m using a Sony Xperia 1V with Android 14, so the icons and menus might look slightly different on your phone. But don’t worry, the steps are generally the same for most Android devices.

How to Find and Start a Screen Recording

Learn how to access the screen recorder and begin capturing your screen.

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen twice to open your full Quick Settings menu.
  2. Look for an icon that says Screen record. It often looks like a phone with a dot.
  3. If you don’t see it, tap the pencil or edit icon to customize your Quick Settings tiles. Find the Screen record option and drag it into your active menu.
  4. Once you find it, tap the Screen record tile.

Before you start, a menu will pop up. This is where you can set up your audio preferences.

Setting Up Your Audio and Screen Taps

Learn how to record sound along with your video.

When you tap the Screen Record button, a settings menu will appear. Here’s what the options usually mean:

  • Record audio: This lets you choose your audio source.
    • Microphone: Records sound from your phone’s mic (your voice).
    • Media sounds: Records audio coming from your phone (like game music or a video’s sound).
    • Microphone and media sounds: Records both at the same time.
    • None: Records a silent video.
  • Show touches: This is a great option for tutorials. If you turn this on, a little circle will appear wherever you tap the screen, so viewers can easily follow along.

After you choose your settings, tap Start. There will be a short countdown, and then your recording will begin.

How to Stop Your Recording

When you’re finished, stopping the recording is easy.

  1. Swipe down from the top of your screen to see your notifications.
  2. You should see a notification that says “Screen recording in progress.”
  3. Just tap the Stop or Square icon on that notification. Your video will automatically be saved to your phone’s photo gallery.

Where to Find Your Recorded Video

Once you stop the recording, your video is automatically saved. You can almost always find it in your phone’s default Photos or Gallery app. Look for a new video file – it’s usually stored in a folder called “Screen recordings” or “Movies.”

And that’s it! Now you know how to capture anything happening on your Android screen, along with sound, to share with others or save for later.
