I’ll show you how to do it using two of the most common phone apps: the standard Google Phone app and the Samsung Phone app.
How to Block Hidden Numbers with the Google Phone App
This method works for many Android phones, including Google Pixels and other devices that use the “Phone by Google” app.
- Open your Phone app. This is the app you use to make calls.
- Look in the top-right corner for the three-dot menu icon and tap it.
- From the menu that appears, select Settings.
- In the Settings menu, tap on Blocked numbers.
- Here, you will see an option for Unknown or Private numbers.
- Simply toggle the switch on for this option.
Once this is enabled, your phone will automatically block any incoming call that doesn’t send its caller ID information.
How to Block Hidden Numbers with the Samsung Phone App
If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, the steps are just a little different.
- Open the Phone app on your Samsung device.
- Make sure you are on the Keypad tab (where you dial numbers).
- Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings from the menu.
- Tap on Block numbers.
- On this screen, turn on the toggle for Block calls from unknown numbers.
This will perform the same function, silently blocking any call that comes from a hidden or unknown number.
What Happens After You Block Them?
When you enable this setting, your phone will automatically send any call from a hidden number straight to voicemail. You won’t see the phone ring, and you won’t get a notification for a missed call. It’s a silent, effective way to filter out these unwanted calls.
A Quick Thing to Keep in Mind
While this is a fantastic way to stop spam, it’s important to know that some legitimate calls can sometimes come from hidden numbers. For example, calls from certain doctors’ offices, hospitals, or government agencies might be marked as private. By turning this on, you might miss those calls.
However, if those places need to reach you urgently, they will almost always leave a voicemail. For most people, the peace and quiet from stopping endless spam calls is well worth it.
