How to Change Google Assistant Voice on Android Devices.

Learn how to change the voice of Google Assistant on your Android phone. If you’re tired of the same voice or just want to try something different, you can pick from several options including different genders and accents.

I’ll show you this on a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 15, but the steps are very similar on Samsung, Google Pixel, OnePlus, Motorola, and most other Android phones.

Before you start

Make sure you’re signed into your Google account on your phone. Google Assistant needs your account to save your preferences. Most Android phones already have you signed in during setup, but if not, you’ll be prompted to sign in when you try to change settings.

How to change Google Assistant voice step by step

Step 1: Open Settings
Find the Settings app on your phone. It looks like a gear icon.

Step 2: Tap on Google
Scroll down until you see “”Google.”” Tap it. This opens all the Google service settings on your phone.

Step 3: Look for Assistant settings
On the Google services page, you’ll see options like:

  • “”Settings for Google apps””
  • “”All services””
  • Or directly “”Assistant”” or “”Gemini””

Tap on the option that leads to Google Assistant. On some phones, you might need to tap “”All services”” first, then find “”Assistant.””

Step 4: Tap on Google Assistant
You’ll see a page with many settings for Google Assistant. Don’t worry about most of them. You’re looking for one specific option.

Step 5: Scroll down to find “”Assistant voice and sounds””
Keep scrolling down the page. It might be near the middle or bottom. Look for “”Assistant voice and sounds”” and tap it.

Step 6: Choose a voice
You’ll now see a list of available voices. Each voice has a name or color (like Red, Orange, Green, Blue, etc.). Tap on any voice to hear a preview. Google Assistant will say a sample sentence so you can hear what it sounds like.

Step 7: Select your favorite
Once you find a voice you like, just tap it. The change saves automatically. You don’t need to press a save button.

Step 8: Test it
Exit Settings and activate Google Assistant. Say “”Hey Google”” or long press the home button. Ask a simple question like “”What’s the weather today?”” to hear your new voice in action.

What voice options are available?

The exact voices depend on your region and language settings. Generally, you can choose from:

  • Multiple female-sounding voices
  • Multiple male-sounding voices
  • Different accents (for English: US, UK, Australian, Indian)
  • Color-named voices (Red, Orange, Green, Blue, Purple – these are usually gender-neutral or varied)

Not all voices are available in every country or language. If you only see a few options, try changing your Google Assistant’s language.

How to change Google Assistant language

Changing the language can give you completely different voice options.

Step 1: Go back to Google Assistant settings (Settings > Google > Assistant settings > Google Assistant)

Step 2: Scroll down to “”Languages””

Step 3: Tap on your current language

Step 4: Select a different language or add a second language

Step 5: Go back to “”Assistant voice and sounds”” to see new voice options

For example, switching from English (US) to English (UK) gives you British accents. Switching to English (Australia) gives you Australian accents. Some languages only have one or two voice options.

What about Gemini versus Google Assistant?

On newer Android phones and in some regions, Google is replacing Google Assistant with Gemini – their newer AI assistant. If you see “”Gemini”” instead of “”Google Assistant”” in your settings, here’s what you need to know:

  • Gemini has fewer voice options than the classic Google Assistant
  • You may not be able to change Gemini’s voice at all yet
  • If you prefer voice customization, you might want to stick with Google Assistant

Some phones let you choose between Gemini and Google Assistant. Check in Settings > Google to see if both are listed.

Why can’t I change the voice?

If the voice options are greyed out or you don’t see “”Assistant voice and sounds,”” check these things:

Your phone is offline – Google Assistant needs an internet connection to download and preview voices

Language restrictions – Some languages only have one voice option

Region restrictions – A few countries have limited voice choices

Parental controls – If your phone has restrictions enabled, they might block voice changes

Work profile – If you’re using a work-managed phone, your company may have disabled this setting

How to change Google Assistant voice using voice commands

There’s actually a quicker way if you’re already using Google Assistant.

Step 1: Activate Google Assistant (say “”Hey Google”” or long press home)

Step 2: Say “”Change your voice”” or “”Change your voice settings””

Step 3: Google Assistant will open the voice settings page for you

This saves you from digging through menus. Pretty handy.

Can I use a custom voice?

No. Google Assistant does not let you upload your own voice recordings or use celebrity voices. You can only choose from the voices Google provides.

Does changing the voice affect other things?

No. Changing the voice only affects how Google Assistant sounds when it speaks back to you. It does NOT change:

  • Your phone’s ringtone or notification sounds
  • The voice in Google Maps navigation (that’s separate)
  • The voice in other apps
  • Your Google Assistant wake word (“”Hey Google”” stays the same)

How to change Google Maps navigation voice separately

Google Maps uses a different voice system. To change that:

  1. Open Google Maps
  2. Tap your profile icon in the top right
  3. Tap Settings
  4. Tap Navigation settings
  5. Look for “”Voice selection”” or “”Voice guide””
  6. Pick from available options

Quick summary

To change Google Assistant voice on Android:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Google
  3. Tap Assistant settings (or Google Assistant)
  4. Scroll to “”Assistant voice and sounds””
  5. Tap on different voices to preview them
  6. Pick the one you like – it saves automatically

Quick tip: Say “”Hey Google, change your voice”” to jump right to the settings page.

The voice you pick is just a preference. You can switch as many times as you want. Listen to a few samples, pick what sounds good to you, and move on with your day. If you get bored later, just come back and pick another one.
