Decathlon Head Lamps Compared Forclaz HL900 vs HL500

Decathlon’s range of head lamps offers are varied with different power options. In the video, I show you the differences between their most popular models, focusing on the Forclaz HL900, HL500, and other options in their lineup.

The Lineup Overview

A Comparison of Power for Decathlon head lamps:

  • Forclaz HL900 V3: 600 Lumens
  • Forclaz HL500 USB V3: 300 Lumens
  • Forclaz HL100 USB: 150 Lumens
  • Caperlan Onnight 100 UV
  • Solognag Furtiv 100: 80 Lumens

Beam Width, Power and Flicker Test

Light Beam and Performance

I looked at them all in the store. From the start Forclaz HL900 is the best one but also the most expensive:

  1. Brightness: The 600-lumen output is impressively bright but the full 600-lumen mode is limited and drains the battery fast
  2. No flickering, which is really important for consistent lighting especially if you’re going to record videos with this light
  3. Beam Width: can vary depending on the mode so it will be good for many night activities like walking or fishing.
  4. Red LED Mode has a dedicated direct access so you don’t have to go thru bright wthite blinding modes to get to the Red LED low power mode

Forclaz HL900 V3

This model is the best for several reasons:

  • Most powerful light output
  • Consistent, stable beam
  • No annoying flickering
  • Versatile with multiple modes and plus minus adjustment of LED power
  • Works both with lithium battery and rechargeable AAA batteries

What to Look For When Choosing a Head Lamp

When selecting a head lamp, keep these specifications in mind:

  • Lumens (brightness)
  • Battery life
  • Weight and comfort
  • Water resistance
  • Beam distance
  • Extra light modes

Cheaper Alternatives

If the HL900 is too much power and too expensive, consider:

  • Forclaz HL500: Solid mid-range option
  • Forclaz HL100: casual use
  • Caperlan Onnight 100: Budget-friendly choice

Tips for Head Lamp Users

  1. Check battery levels before heading out
  2. Carry spare batteries or a charging cable and power bank or wall charger
  3. Clean the lens regularly for optimal performance
  4. Store in a cool, dry place when not in use

Conclusions

I didn’t purchase any of these models but the Forclaz HL900 would be my choice mostly for the extra power that would not be used all the time and it’s time limited because of overheating but it’s always there available when needed.

Also being able to use both lithium built-in battery pack and rechargeable AAA batteries makes it really good for fishing trips when I carry AAA spare batteries.

Currently I have a couple of Energizer cheap head lamps with decent power and quick access to the red led mode.

The current cheap Energizer head lamps are starting to have their head band getting loose but they are build very simple and the band is easy to replace.

I might replace the elastic band on the old head lamps or buy one HL-900 V3 or V4 who knows.
