How to Disable Absolute Bluetooth Volume on Samsung Galaxy Android Devices.
Learn how to turn off Absolute Bluetooth Volume on your Samsung phone to fix volume control problems with your Bluetooth headphones or speakers.
If you have issues with your Bluetooth headphones or speakers where the volume feels too quiet, too loud, or the controls do not respond properly, the Absolute Bluetooth Volume feature might be the cause. Disabling it can give you better control over your audio device.
This guide uses a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra running Android 14 with OneUI 6.1. The steps work for most Samsung Galaxy phones and many other Android devices like Google Pixel, Sony Xperia, Huawei, and Xiaomi.
What Is Absolute Bluetooth Volume?
Absolute Bluetooth Volume is a feature that syncs your phone’s volume control with your Bluetooth device’s internal volume control. When it works well, pressing volume up or down on your phone changes the volume on your headphones or speaker directly.
Sometimes this feature causes problems. The volume might jump from too quiet to too loud with no good middle ground. Or the volume controls on your headphones might not work at all. In these cases, disabling Absolute Bluetooth Volume can help.
A Warning Before You Start
When you disable Absolute Bluetooth Volume, your phone and your Bluetooth device will have separate volume controls. This means you might be able to push the volume much higher than before.
Listening to loud music on headphones for a long time can damage your hearing. Start at a low volume and slowly increase until it sounds comfortable. Never listen at levels that hurt your ears.
Also, when you change this setting, remove your headphones from your ears first. There could be a sudden loud noise when the setting switches.
How to Enable Developer Options
The Absolute Bluetooth Volume setting lives inside Developer Options. This menu is hidden by default on Samsung phones.
Here is how to enable Developer Options:
· Open the Settings app
· Scroll down and tap About phone
· Tap Software information
· Look for Build number
· Tap Build number seven times in a row
· Enter your phone’s PIN or password if asked
· You will see a message saying “”Developer mode has been enabled””
Developer Options will now appear in your Settings menu, usually near the bottom.
How to Disable Absolute Bluetooth Volume
Once Developer Options are enabled, follow these steps:
· Open Settings
· Scroll down and tap Developer options
· Scroll through the list until you find the Networking section
· Look for Disable absolute volume
· Tap the toggle to turn it on
When the toggle is on, Absolute Bluetooth Volume is disabled. When the toggle is off, the feature is enabled.
What to Do After Changing the Setting
For the change to take full effect, follow these steps:
· Restart your Samsung phone
· Disconnect your Bluetooth headphones or speakers
· Reconnect them
· Test the volume controls to see if the problem is fixed
How to Turn It Back On
If disabling Absolute Bluetooth Volume does not help, or if it makes things worse, you can easily turn it back on.
Here is how to re-enable it:
· Go back to Settings > Developer options
· Find Disable absolute volume
· Tap the toggle to turn it off
· Restart your phone and reconnect your Bluetooth device
Should You Disable It or Leave It On?
It depends on your devices.
Disable it (turn the toggle on) if:
· Your Bluetooth volume jumps from too quiet to too loud with nothing in between
· Volume controls on your phone do not change the volume on your headphones
· You have compatibility issues between your phone and your Bluetooth device
Leave it enabled (toggle off) if:
· Your volume controls work perfectly fine
· You like having one volume setting that controls both phone and headphones
A Note About Different Headphones
Some headphones work better with this setting on, some work better with it off. In the video example using Sony XM5 headphones with a Samsung phone, the feature worked fine when left enabled. Disabling it actually made the volume too low for that specific combination.
If you have different brands or older devices, disabling Absolute Bluetooth Volume is more likely to help. Try it both ways and see which setting gives you smoother volume control. Just remember to keep the volume at a safe level when testing.
