It’s so light and thin that I immediately felt like I needed a case and a screen protector. I want to be able to use it without constantly worrying about dropping or scratching it.

In this post, I show you how the ESR Folio Magnetic Case for the iPad Pro looks and how well it performs. It’s not an Apple-made case, but at first sight, it seems like decent quality.

First Impressions and Build Quality

The case feels light and thin. I would even say it looks elegant with its simple design. The price was good, and it doesn’t add much bulk, which is great for keeping the iPad’s sleek profile.

What I Like About This Case

The folio design works well for everyday use. Here are the main benefits:

· Strong Magnets: The case attaches securely to the iPad Pro using magnets, and it holds well.
· Good Folding Function: The front cover folds back easily into a stable stand for typing or watching videos.
· Apple Pencil Pro Flap: There’s a dedicated flap to hold the Apple Pencil Pro. It works great and keeps the pencil securely in place.

The Big Problem is Lack of Protection

The only big problem I see with this magnetic folio case and with magnetic keyboards in general for the iPad Pro or iPad Air is the lack of edge protection.

If you drop the iPad on a hard surface like concrete or pavement, your iPad has a big chance of getting a dent. The case only has a slight raised lip on two of the corners. The other two corners, near the power and volume buttons, are very close to the edge. I guess they made that side shorter so you can use the buttons easily, but it leaves the iPad exposed.

This one would have been so much better if it had more edge protection for such an expensive device. I’m considering adding some foam to the corners for a bit more protection, or I might just return the case.

Finding a Good Case is Tough

Today I was looking at other iPad Pro 13-inch cases, and it’s not easy to find a great one. It seems like a challenge to get a slim, functional case that also offers solid drop protection.

A Note on the ESR Screen Protector

I also installed a glass screen protector from ESR. The pack came with two protectors. One was already shattered near the alignment pin, likely from some impact during shipping. Thankfully, the second screen protector worked. It went on without a problem and feels smooth and good to use.

Purchase Information

I purchased this from the ESR Amazon Germany store. The product code is X0022XDB3T. It’s made in China. ESR is a trademark of ELECTRONIC SILK ROAD (SHENZHEN) TECH CO. LTD.

A Quick Look at My iPad Pro M5 Setup

My iPad model is the MDYJ4TY/A, Model A3360 iPad Pro 13-inch Wi-Fi 256GB in Space Black. The EAN barcode is 195950398168.

I chose the 13-inch model because I don’t travel with an iPad much. With the new windowed mode in iPadOS, it’s great to have more screen space.

Why I Chose the iPad Pro M5 256GB

The iPad Pro 13-inch 256GB model comes with the new M5 Apple chip. The biggest reason I chose the M5 over the M4 is the RAM.

The new iPad Pro M5 base models (256GB and 512GB) now come with 12GB of RAM. The previous M4 model in the same storage sizes only had 8GB. The 1TB and 2TB iPad Pro M5 models don’t get an upgrade and stay the same as the iPad Pro M4 with 16GB of RAM.

I didn’t want to spend so much on a 1TB iPad Pro. I was ready to buy an iPad Air M3, which has 8GB of RAM, until I realized the new base model iPad Pro M5 starts at 12GB RAM. The extra memory is great for future-proofing and more demanding tasks.

My Thoughts on the Apple Pencil Pro

I bought the Apple Pencil Pro to use with the iPad Pro for taking notes, drawing, and photo editing. The model is MX2D3ZM/A (A2538) with a manufacture date of 05/2025. The EAN barcode is 195949573125.

I did not buy the Apple Magic Keyboard for the iPad, as I believe it’s pretty expensive for what it is.

Final Thoughts

The ESR Folio Case is a good, affordable option if you primarily need a stand, a pencil holder, and scratch protection. It’s slim, looks nice, and the magnets are strong.

However, if you are clumsy or plan to take your iPad out of the house often, you should be aware that it offers very little protection against drops due to the exposed edges.

For me, that’s a significant downside for a device as expensive as the iPad Pro.
