How to Open a Stuck Glove Box on a VW Polo 9N.

Learn how to get into a jammed glove box on your VW Polo Mk4 9N. If the latch has stopped working and your glove box is stuck shut, I’ll show you how to force it open, remove the broken catch, and get your things back.

Why Your Glove Box Gets Stuck

The plastic latch mechanism inside the glove box handle can wear out or break over time. When this happens, pulling the handle doesn’t release the catch, so the door won’t open. This is a common issue on many cars, including the VW Polo.

Before you start, take the key out of the ignition. This is a safety step, especially since there’s a passenger airbag in the dashboard above the glove box area.

Step 1: Try to Force the Latch Open (The Quick Method)

Sometimes, you can free the latch without taking anything apart. If you need something from inside right away, try this first.

  1. Pull and tap. Firmly pull the glove box handle outward. While pulling, use your other hand to tap firmly on the front of the glove box door, right around the handle area.
  2. Try different pressures. You can also try pressing inward on the door while pulling the handle. The goal is to wiggle the stuck internal latch.
  3. Don’t force it too hard. Be firm but careful. You don’t want to crack the plastic door. Stop if it feels like you’re using excessive force.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll need to manually release the latch from the inside, which means you have to get to it.

Step 2: Manually Release the Latch with a Tool

If tapping doesn’t work, you need to trip the latch mechanism directly. You might break the plastic handle doing this, but it will get the door open.

  1. Find the gap. Look at the seam where the glove box door meets the dashboard, right under the handle.
  2. Insert a thin tool. Use a very thin flat-head screwdriver, a sturdy plastic trim tool, or even a strong metal pick.
  3. Feel for the latch. Insert the tool straight in, then angle it upward. You are trying to find a small, hooked piece of plastic inside—that’s the latch.
  4. Press and release. When you feel it, press the tool firmly downward (toward the ground) while simultaneously pulling on the glove box handle. This should trip the latch and pop the door open.

Step 3: Remove the Broken Glove Box Catch

Once the door is open, you can take out the broken mechanism. You don’t need to remove the entire glove box.

What you’ll need:

  • A Torx screwdriver or bit (usually size T15 or T20).
  • A new latch (Part number: 6Q0 857 131 D).

The steps:

  1. Open the glove box fully.
  2. Look inside at the top of the opening. You’ll see the rectangular catch mechanism held in by two Torx screws.
  3. Use your Torx screwdriver to remove these two screws.
  4. The entire catch assembly will now be loose. Wiggle it out from the front of the glove box door.

Your Temporary and Permanent Fix Options

With the broken catch removed, you have two choices:

Option 1: The Temporary Velcro Fix
If you don’t have a new part yet, you can keep the glove box closed with hook-and-loop tape (like Velcro).

  1. Stick the soft “loop” side on the inside edge of the glove box opening.
  2. Stick the rough “hook” side on the corresponding spot on the glove box door.
  3. Press to close. It will hold securely, and you can pull it open when you need to.

Option 2: Replace the Catch (The Right Fix)

  1. Search online for the part number 6Q0 857 131 D. Make sure the color matches your interior (usually grey or black).
  2. To install it, simply place the new catch into the hole in the glove box door.
  3. Screw the two Torx screws back in from the inside.
  4. Test the handle several times to make sure it locks and releases smoothly.

Getting a stuck glove box open can be frustrating, but with these steps, you can solve the problem yourself in under 30 minutes and get back to what’s really important, getting your stuff out.
