Add Your Number to iMessage and FaceTime

iPhone 16 Pro Max iOS 18.4.1

How to Check and Add Your Phone Number to iMessage and FaceTime on iPhone.

Learn how to make sure that your phone number is added to iMessage and FaceTime on your iPhone. If your contacts can’t reach you or your number isn’t showing as an option, I’ll show you the steps to check and fix it.

I’m showing you on iOS 26.1 on an iPhone 16 Pro Max. But these steps work on any iPhone with a modern version of iOS.

Why Your Phone Number Might Not Be Showing

There are a few common reasons why your phone number might not be linked to iMessage or FaceTime:

  • You just got a new iPhone and haven’t checked the settings yet
  • You changed your SIM card recently
  • Your messages are only going to your email address instead of your phone number
  • iMessage activation didn’t complete properly when you set up your phone

The good news is that fixing this takes less than a minute.

How to Check If Your Number Is Added

Step 1: Open Settings
Tap the Settings app on your iPhone home screen.

Step 2: Find Messages
Scroll down and tap on Messages.

Step 3: Tap Send & Receive
Look for the “Send & Receive” option and tap it. This screen shows you two things:

  • Which addresses you can receive iMessages and FaceTime calls from
  • Which address is used when you start a new conversation

Step 4: Look for your phone number
On this screen, you’ll see a list under “You can receive iMessages and FaceTime at.” Your phone number should be checked. If it’s not checked, that’s your problem.

How to Add Your Phone Number

If your phone number appears in the list but isn’t checked, here’s how to add it:

Step 1: Tap your phone number
On the Send & Receive screen, tap your phone number in the list.

Step 2: Confirm the activation
A pop-up will appear saying your network provider might charge you for SMS messages used to activate iMessage and FaceTime. This is normal. Tap “Turn On.”

Step 3: Wait a few seconds
Your iPhone will contact Apple’s servers to register your number. It might take 10-20 seconds. Sometimes it looks stuck, but just give it a moment.

Step 4: Check the result
Once activated, your phone number will show as checked in both sections:

  • In the “You can receive” list
  • In the “Start new conversations from” list

What the Two Lists Mean

Start new conversations fromThis is what people see as your sender info when you message them

What If Your Phone Number Doesn’t Show Up At All?

Your phone number is automatically read from your SIM card. If it doesn’t appear on the Send & Receive screen at all, try these steps:

  1. Go back to the main Messages settings screen
  2. Toggle iMessage off, wait 10 seconds, then toggle it back on
  3. Wait for the activation to complete
  4. Check Send & Receive again

If your number still doesn’t appear, check that your SIM card is properly inserted and that you have a working cellular connection.

A Quick Note About Activation Charges

When you first activate iMessage with your phone number, Apple sends a hidden SMS to verify your number. Your carrier might charge you for this one message. It’s usually a standard text message rate. This only happens once.

How to Check FaceTime Settings Too

FaceTime shares the same phone number settings as iMessage. To confirm:

Step 1: Go to Settings
Step 2: Scroll down and tap FaceTime
Step 3: Look under “You can be reached by FaceTime at”

Your phone number should appear here with a checkmark. If not, tap it to add it.

The Bottom Line

Once your phone number is checked in both iMessage and FaceTime settings, people can reach you using your regular phone number. Your messages will show as blue bubbles (iMessage) instead of green (SMS), and FaceTime calls will ring your phone number instead of just your email.

Learn how to enable your number for iMessage and FaceTime so people can contact you correctly. This quick check can solve common problems like iMessage activation errors or when FaceTime calls don’t come to your phone.
