How to Delete and Remove an eSIM from Your iPhone.

Got an old travel eSIM still sitting on your iPhone? Or maybe you’re switching carriers and need to clear out the old plan. It’s a good idea to remove eSIM profiles you’re not using anymore. I’ll show you how to find them and delete them safely without messing up your main phone line.

Learn how to manage your eSIM settings. We’re looking at this on an iPhone 16 Pro Max running iOS 26, but the steps are almost identical on any iPhone that supports eSIM.

The Difference: Turning Off vs. Deleting an eSIM

Before you start, it helps to know you have two options:

  • Turn Off an eSIM: This is like putting the plan on pause. The eSIM profile stays on your phone, but it can’t connect to the network. You can turn it back on anytime with a tap. Do this if you might need the plan again, like a data plan you use every few months.
  • Delete an eSIM: This completely removes the profile from your iPhone. It’s permanent. You would need to get a new eSIM activation from your carrier to use it again. Do this for plans you are 100% done with.

How to Find and Delete Your eSIM

The setting is in your Cellular menu. Here are the steps.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap on Cellular (or Mobile Data).
  3. You will see a list of all your cellular plans, both physical SIM and eSIM. Find the eSIM plan you want to remove.

Step 4: Delete the eSIM Profile

Tap on the eSIM plan you want to delete. On its settings page, look at the bottom.

  • To just turn it off, tap the switch next to Turn On This Line. This will gray out.
  • To delete it permanently, tap Delete eSIM. You will get a warning pop-up.
  • Tap Delete in the pop-up to confirm.

The eSIM profile is now gone from your device.

What to Do If You Can’t Delete an eSIM

Sometimes, the “Delete eSIM” button might be grayed out or missing. This usually means one of two things:

  1. It’s Your Last Active Line: Your iPhone won’t let you delete the only cellular plan that is currently turned on. Make sure you have at least one other line (like your main number) active before trying to delete a secondary eSIM.
  2. Carrier Restrictions: Some carriers “lock” the eSIM profile to your device. If you can’t delete it and you’re sure it’s not your only line, you likely need to contact your carrier’s customer service. They can often remove it from their side or give you instructions.

Important Tips Before You Delete

A little caution can save you a headache later.

  • Contact Your Carrier First: If there’s any chance you’ll need this phone number or data plan again, call your carrier before you delete. Ask them: “If I delete this eSIM from my iPhone, can I reactivate it later?” Sometimes they can note your account or tell you the reactivation process.
  • It’s Usually Permanent: Once you tap “Delete,” the plan is gone from your phone. You can’t get it back by yourself.
  • Free Up Space: Removing old eSIMs you don’t need helps keep your cellular settings menu clean and organized.

That’s all there is to it! It’s a simple process to keep your phone’s settings tidy and make room for new plans when you travel or switch services.
