How to Turn On Your iPhone’s SIM Card (Physical SIM or eSIM).

Need to switch on a phone line you turned off? Or maybe you just got a new eSIM and need to activate it. I’ll show you how to enable a physical SIM or an eSIM on your iPhone in just a few taps. This is perfect if you’re traveling and switching to a local SIM or just managing two numbers.

Learn how to find the right settings. We’re using an iPhone 16 Pro Max on iOS 26, but this works the same way on most newer iPhones.

How to Find Your SIM Card Settings

All your SIM and eSIM plans are managed in one place. Here’s how to get there.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Cellular (on some iPhones, it might say Mobile Data).
  3. You will see a list of all your Cellular Plans. This includes both physical SIM cards and eSIM profiles.

How to Enable a Physical SIM Card

If you have a physical SIM card in your phone that’s currently turned off, follow these steps to turn it back on.

Step 1: Find the Right Plan

In your Cellular settings, look for the plan linked to your physical SIM. It will usually have your carrier’s name (like “Verizon” or “AT&T”).

Step 2: Turn On the Line

Tap on that plan. On the next screen, you will see a switch next to Turn On This Line.

  • Tap the switch to turn it ON (it will turn green).
  • Your iPhone will now try to connect to that carrier’s network. This usually only takes a few seconds.

That’s it! Your physical SIM is now active and ready for calls and data.

How to Enable an eSIM

The process for turning on an eSIM is almost exactly the same. If you’ve already installed an eSIM profile on your iPhone but it’s not active, here is what to do.

Step 1: Locate the eSIM Plan

In your Cellular settings, find the plan for the eSIM you want to use. It might be labeled with a carrier name, or something like “Travel Data eSIM.”

Step 2: Activate the eSIM Line

Tap on that eSIM plan. On its settings page, tap the switch next to Turn On This Line to turn it ON.

Your eSIM is now enabled and working.

How to Set Your Default Line

If you turn on two lines at once (like a physical SIM and an eSIM), your iPhone will ask you to choose a default. This tells your phone which number to use for new calls and messages.

After turning on a second line, a menu will often pop up. If it doesn’t, you can set it manually:

  1. Go back to Settings > Cellular.
  2. Tap Default Voice Line.
  3. Choose which of your active lines you want to use as your main calling number.

You can also choose a default line for your cellular data in the same menu under Cellular Data.

Important Things to Know

Here are a couple of tips to keep everything running smoothly.

  • No Plan Listed? If you don’t see the eSIM or physical SIM plan you’re looking for in the list, it might not be installed on your phone yet. An eSIM needs to be set up first, and a physical SIM needs to be properly inserted into the SIM tray.
  • Only One Active at a Time? Most modern iPhones can have two lines active at the same time. This is called Dual SIM. If you can’t turn on a second line, check with your carrier to make sure your account supports it.

Now you know how to switch your phone service on and off. It’s a simple way to control your plans, whether you’re at home or exploring somewhere new.
