iPhone How to Remove Photo from Contact.
Learn how to remove a photo from a contact on your iPhone. If you want to delete an outdated picture or prefer having no image for certain contacts, this is quick to do.
I will show you this on an iPhone 16 Pro Max running iOS 26 Beta 6. The steps are the same on most iPhone models and iOS versions.
Why remove a contact photo
There are a few reasons you might want to delete a contact picture:
- The photo is old or outdated
- You never liked the picture in the first place
- You prefer a cleaner look with just the initials
- You want all your contacts to look consistent
Removing the photo does not delete the contact. All phone numbers, email addresses, and other details stay exactly the same.
Two ways to find the contact
You can remove a contact photo from either the Phone app or the Contacts app. Both work the same way.
Method 1 – Using the Phone app:
- Open the Phone app (green icon with a white phone)
- Tap “”Contacts”” at the bottom
- Find and tap the contact you want to change
Method 2 – Using the Contacts app:
- Open the Contacts app (icon with a person silhouette)
- Find and tap the contact you want to change
How to remove the photo step by step
Step 1: Open the Phone or Contacts app
Step 2: Find the contact with the photo you want to remove
Step 3: Tap on the contact to open their details page
Step 4: Tap “”Edit”” in the top right corner of the screen
Step 5: Tap on the photo or the circle where the photo is located. This is below the contact name, right above the “”Add Phone”” section.
Step 6: A menu will pop up with options. Tap “”Edit”” on this menu (not the top right Edit button).
Step 7: You will see several options:
- Take Photo
- Choose Photo
- Choose from Recents (previous photos)
- Monogram
- Memoji
- Emoji
Step 8: To remove the photo, tap “”Monogram””
Step 9: The monogram will show one or two letters (usually the contact’s initials)
Step 10: You can customize the monogram background color if you want. Tap the colored circles to change it.
Step 11: Tap “”Done”” in the top right corner
The photo is now removed. The contact will show a simple monogram (letter or letters) instead of the picture.
What if you want a blank circle with no letters?
iOS does not let you have a completely empty contact icon. The closest you can get is the monogram with a single letter. You can make the background color very light, but the letter will still be there.
What happens to the photo after you remove it
The photo is not permanently deleted right away. iOS keeps a history of recent photos for each contact.
If you change your mind, you can go back to the same contact, tap Edit, tap the photo area, and look under “”Recents.”” You may see the old photo there. You can tap it to restore it.
How to set an emoji or Memoji instead of a photo
If you do not want a real photo but also do not want a plain monogram, you can use an emoji or Memoji.
To use an emoji:
- Tap Edit, then tap the photo area
- Tap “”Emoji””
- Pick an emoji from the list
- Choose a background color
- Tap Done
To use a Memoji:
- Tap Edit, then tap the photo area
- Tap “”Memoji””
- Choose or create a Memoji
- Choose a pose and background color
- Tap Done
Does removing a contact photo sync across devices?
If you use iCloud Contacts, yes. When you remove a photo from a contact on your iPhone, the change syncs to your iPad, Mac, and any other device using the same iCloud account.
The sync may take a few seconds or minutes. If you do not see the change on another device, give it a moment or pull down to refresh the contact list.
Can you remove a photo from multiple contacts at once
No. You have to remove photos one contact at a time. There is no batch delete option for contact photos.
