Sony Xperia 1 V Android 14 Desktop Mode. It Almost Works But Not Really.
Learn how to use desktop mode on a Sony Xperia 1 V. If you’re hoping for a full PC-like experience on your TV, like Samsung’s DeX, you might be a bit disappointed. I tried it on Android 14, and while it technically works, it’s barely usable in its current state.

The “Force Desktop Mode” option in the Developer Settings turns something on, but it’s nowhere near a complete desktop experience. Let me show you what happens when you try.
What You Need to Try Desktop Mode
To even attempt this, you’ll need a few things:
- Your Sony Xperia 1 V (or similar phone).
- A USB-C hub that supports HDMI output.
- An HDMI cable and a TV or monitor.
- A keyboard and mouse (Bluetooth or with a USB receiver).
- Patience. You’ll need it.
Step 1: Connecting Everything
First, connect all your gear. I plugged my USB-C hub into the phone, then connected an HDMI cable from the hub to my TV. I also plugged in the wireless receiver for my keyboard and mouse.
- When you connect the HDMI, you’ll get a notification on your phone: “External device connected.”
- The phone will ask if you want to output audio and video simultaneously. Select “OK.”
- By default, your TV will simply mirror your phone’s screen.
Step 2: Enabling “Force Desktop Mode”
This is the secret developer option that’s supposed to help.
- First, you need to enable Developer Options on your phone. You do this by tapping the “Build Number” in your Settings app 7 times.
- Go into the new Developer Options menu.
- Scroll down and find the setting called “Force desktop mode.”
- Turn this setting on.
- Your phone will immediately prompt you to restart. Go ahead and reboot.
Step 3: The Disappointing Reality
After the restart, you will see something on your TV. It looks a bit more like a desktop, with a different background and layout.
But here’s where the problems start:
- Confusing Dual Screens: Your phone and TV show different things, but they don’t work together smoothly. It’s not a true extended desktop.
- Mouse Jail: Getting your mouse cursor to move from your phone’s screen to the TV desktop is a huge struggle. Most of the time, the mouse is trapped on the phone’s display.
- No Start Menu: Pressing the Windows key on your keyboard brings up the app menu on your phone, not on the TV desktop.
- Unreliable: The connection and behavior are finicky. Sometimes the TV display just stops working and you have to unplug and replug everything.
In the end, the most stable way to use it is to forget “Force Desktop Mode” and just use basic screen mirroring. If you turn your phone sideways (landscape), you can use it with a keyboard and mouse from your couch, but it’s just a big version of your phone screen. It’s not a standalone desktop environment.
How It Compares to the Competition
I’ll be showing this in a future video, but the difference is night and day. Samsung’s DeX mode (on a Galaxy S23 Ultra, for example) creates a clean, separate, and fully-functional desktop on your TV. Your phone can be used for something else entirely. It feels like a real computer.
The Sony Xperia’s implementation feels like an unfinished developer preview. It’s a feature that’s half-baked and not ready for people who actually want to get work done.
Final Verdict: A Neat Trick, Not a Useful Tool
Learn how to set this up if you’re curious, but don’t expect to replace your laptop. The Sony Xperia 1 V’s desktop mode on Android 14 is more of a proof-of-concept than a practical feature. It’s frustratingly close to being good, but the clunky controls and lack of a true independent interface make it a “disaster” for daily use.
For now, if you need a mobile desktop experience, you’re better off looking at Samsung or other brands that have invested in making this feature actually work.
