I’m using a Sony Xperia 1V with Android 14. The gestures might have slightly different names or look a tiny bit different on your Samsung, Google Pixel, or other Android phone, but the core ideas are the same.
The Quick Switch Gesture (The Fastest Method)
This is hands-down the quickest way to jump between your two most recent apps.
- Make sure you are using gesture navigation (swipe from the bottom to go home). This is usually the default.
- Simply swipe right along the very bottom edge of your screen.
- This will instantly switch you back to the last app you were using. You can keep swiping right to cycle through your recent apps.
This method is lightning-fast and perfect for when you’re copying info between two apps, like your browser and notes.
Using the Recent Apps Menu
Learn how to see all your open apps at once to pick the exact one you need.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold your finger for a second before lifting it.
- This will open the overview screen, showing you all your recently used apps.
- Just tap on the app window you want to switch to. It’s that easy.
How to Use Split-Screen (Multi-Window) Mode
Learn how to view two apps at the same time for true multitasking.
If you want to see two apps side-by-side, you can use split-screen mode.
- First, open the Recent Apps menu by swiping up and holding.
- Find the app you want to use in the top window and tap the app’s icon at the top of its preview card.
- From the menu that appears, select Split top or Split screen.
- The app will move to the top half of your screen, and you will be shown your recent apps on the bottom half. Tap a second app to open it in the bottom half.
- You can adjust the divider between the two apps by dragging it up or down.
To exit split-screen mode, just drag the divider all the way to the top or bottom of the screen.
Using these simple gestures will make moving around your Android phone feel smooth and efficient, letting you get your tasks done faster.
