VW Polo 9N Mk4 Blue Smoke Exhaust Burning Oil PCV Valve Check and Clean.
The PCV valve or engine block breather valve can be a cause of burning engine oil and it’s the easiest and cheapest to fix before thinking of rebuilding the engine which can be very expensive or changing engine oil from 5w40 to 10w40 to use thicker oil and allow some engine wear to work without burning oil.
Video Overview of Cleaning the PCV Valve
Engjne Buring Oil
For me it was burning a lot of oil so I checked the PCV valve.
When opening the oil fill cap with engine running if the engine doesn’t stall it means the PCV valve might be blocked.
For me it did look like slowing down after opening the cap but there was engine oil all around the PCV valve breather hose.
PCV Valve Cleaning or Replacement
After removing it clean the holes carefully and better avoid using paper like I did and use a lint-free microfiber cloth to make sure you don’t bring any foreign objects into the engine block.
I cleaned the PCV valve and breather hose with Carb Spray Cleaner and it removed a lot of gunk from it so it might be ok but the hose had a crack in it.
I put electrical tape around it but that will need to be replaced soon.
The PCV valve engine block breather hose part numbers are here so anyone with this engine can use them.
VW Polo 9N Mk4 AZQ engine PCV Valve Part number: 03E103765B or 03E 103 765 B
PCV Breather Hose Part number: 03E103201B or 03E 103 201 B
I will order a new PCV valve and hose and replace it later.
For now, the engine makes very little smoke when revving the engine harder.
It’s nothing like before.

Big Engine Problems
If the PCV valve is ok, and you recently changed the engine oil, try to drive the car 1K km and see if it still burns oil.
When changing engine oil, the new oil acts as a detergent and it might remove some carbon burned on the edges of the engine pistons.
Regular Maintenance is Important
An old engine will have more space between the pistons and engine block allowing oil to pass and burn in the ignition phase. Crud and carbon buildup can help seal the engine pistons until you changed the oil.
You have to change the engine oil at regular intervals and if your car burns oil hope it’s only the PCV valve not working properly and creating vacuum in the engine that forces engine oil past the piston edges into the combustion chamber.
I hope this helps you!
