How to Enable SIM PIN Code on iPhone.
Learn how to require a SIM PIN code after restart on your iPhone. If you want extra security for your iPhone’s SIM card, I’ll show you how to enable the SIM PIN code. This makes your iPhone ask for the PIN every time you restart your phone or remove the SIM card.
I am showing you on iOS 18.5 with an iPhone 16 Pro Max Titanium Black 256 GB version Global model A3296 – MYWV3ZD/A. The same steps work on any iPhone that has a physical SIM card or supports SIM PIN settings.
What Is a SIM PIN and Why Use It
A SIM PIN is a code that locks your physical SIM card. When you enable this feature, your SIM card cannot be used without entering the correct PIN. This is true even if someone removes the SIM from your iPhone and puts it into another phone. The other phone will ask for the PIN right away. Without it, the SIM card will not work at all.
This is useful if your phone is lost or stolen. A thief cannot take your SIM card and use it in another device. They also cannot use your mobile data or make calls from your number.
The SIM PIN is different from your iPhone passcode. Your iPhone passcode unlocks your phone. The SIM PIN specifically protects your SIM card.
How to Enable SIM PIN on iPhone
Follow these steps to turn on SIM PIN protection:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone
- Tap on “Cellular” (on some models it may say “Mobile Service” or “Mobile Data”)
- Look for “SIM PIN” and tap on it
- Toggle the switch to turn SIM PIN on
- Enter your current SIM PIN when prompted
- Tap “Done”
Once enabled, your SIM card is locked. You will need to enter the PIN whenever you restart your iPhone or whenever the SIM card is removed and reinserted.
What Is the Default SIM PIN
Most mobile carriers set a default SIM PIN when they issue your SIM card. Common default PINs include:
- 1111
- 0000
- 1234
If you have never changed your SIM PIN before, try one of these. If none work, contact your mobile carrier to ask for your default SIM PIN.
How to Change Your SIM PIN
After you enable SIM PIN, you can change it to a number you will remember more easily. Here is how:
- Go to Settings > Cellular > SIM PIN
- Tap “Change PIN” (this option appears after SIM PIN is enabled)
- Enter your current SIM PIN
- Enter your new SIM PIN (4 to 8 digits)
- Enter the new PIN again to confirm
Pick a PIN you will remember but that is not too obvious. Avoid easy numbers like 1234 or your birth year.
What Happens When You Restart Your iPhone
After you enable SIM PIN, here is what happens when you restart your iPhone:
- Turn off your iPhone completely
- Turn it back on
- You will see the regular iPhone passcode screen first
- After entering your passcode, you will see a “SIM PIN” screen
- Enter your SIM PIN
- Your iPhone will then connect to the cellular network
If you cancel or do not enter the SIM PIN, your iPhone will still work with Wi-Fi. You just will not have any cellular signal. You cannot make calls, send SMS messages, or use mobile data until you enter the correct PIN.
Does Face ID or Touch ID Work for SIM PIN
No. Face ID and Touch ID do not work for SIM PIN. You must type the PIN manually each time. This is a security feature. The SIM PIN is stored on the SIM card itself, not on your iPhone. Your biometric data never leaves your phone, so it cannot be used to unlock the SIM card.
What Happens If You Enter the Wrong PIN
You get three attempts to enter the correct SIM PIN. Here is what happens:
- First wrong attempt: It shows “2 attempts remaining”
- Second wrong attempt: It shows “1 attempt remaining”
- Third wrong attempt: Your SIM card locks completely
If your SIM locks, you will see a message saying “SIM locked” or “Enter PUK code.”
What Is a PUK Code and How to Get One
PUK stands for Personal Unblocking Key. It is a longer code (usually 8 digits) that unlocks a locked SIM card. You cannot guess a PUK code. You must get it from your mobile carrier.
To get your PUK code:
- Check the documents that came with your SIM card (some carriers print the PUK on the card holder)
- Log into your mobile carrier’s website or app
- Call your carrier’s customer support
After too many wrong PIN attempts, you will need to enter the PUK code. Then you can set a new SIM PIN. If you enter the wrong PUK code too many times, your SIM card will be permanently disabled. You will need a new SIM card from your carrier.
How to Disable SIM PIN
If you decide you no longer want the extra security, you can turn SIM PIN off. Here is how:
- Go to Settings > Cellular > SIM PIN
- Toggle the switch to turn SIM PIN off
- Enter your current SIM PIN to confirm
- The feature is now disabled
When disabled, your SIM card will work immediately after restart without asking for a PIN.
Does This Work on eSIM
The SIM PIN feature described here is for physical SIM cards only. eSIM (embedded SIM) does not use a SIM PIN in the same way. eSIM security is handled differently by your carrier. If you use eSIM only, this guide may not apply to you.
Important Things to Remember
Before you enable SIM PIN, keep these points in mind:
- Know your current SIM PIN before you start
- Write down your PIN and keep it somewhere safe
- Know where to find your PUK code in case you get locked out
- Do not guess the PIN too many times
- The SIM PIN only applies to the physical SIM card, not to your iPhone storage or iCloud
Final Thoughts
Learn how to enable SIM PIN code on your iPhone by going to Settings > Cellular > SIM PIN and toggling it on. This adds an important layer of security to your mobile service. If your phone is lost or stolen, the person who finds it cannot use your SIM card in another phone.
Just be careful with your PIN. Three wrong attempts will lock your SIM, and you will need your PUK code from your carrier to unlock it. Keep both codes in a safe place.
Thanks for watching. I hope this helps you secure your iPhone’s SIM card. Let me know if you have any questions.
