Installing Nikon DK-17M Magnifying Eyepiece and DK-19 Rubber Eyecup

If you need a better viewfinder on your Nikon camera, the DK-17M magnifying eyepiece and DK-19 rubber eyecup are excellent additions.
I will show you the installation process step by step.

Compatible Cameras

This setup works with Nikon cameras featuring the round screw-in viewfinder eyepiece, including:

  • D850, D500, and D5
  • D4, D3, D2, and D1 series
  • Df and D800 series
  • D700
  • F6, F5, and F4 series

Before Installing

The DK-17M magnifier might:

  • Partially block the viewfinder status display on some models
  • Slightly reduce viewfinder frame coverage on certain cameras

These limitations don’t affect your actual photos.

Installation Guide

Installing DK-19 with Stock Viewfinder

  1. Remove your existing eyecup by rotating it counterclockwise
  2. Clean the viewfinder rim with a microfiber cloth
  3. Align the DK-19 with the viewfinder thread
  4. Gently screw it on clockwise until snug (don’t overtighten)

Installing DK-17M Magnifier Only

  1. Remove the current eyepiece by unscrewing counterclockwise
  2. Clean both the viewfinder rim and the DK-17M glass
  3. Carefully align the DK-17M with the threads
  4. Turn clockwise until secure
  5. Test the focus by looking through the viewfinder

Installing Both DK-19 and DK-17M Together

  1. Remove the standard eyepiece
  2. Install the DK-17M first
  3. Clean the outer rim of the DK-17M
  4. Attach the DK-19 by screwing it onto the DK-17M
  5. Ensure both pieces are firmly secured but not overtightened

Use Both Viewfinder Attachments

Combination advantages:

  • Enhanced magnification for precise manual focusing
  • Better eye relief for comfortable shooting
  • Reduced light leak during long exposures
  • More comfortable viewing experience, especially with glasses

Maintenance

  • Keep both accessories clean with a microfiber cloth
  • Store your camera with the eyepiece covered when not in use
  • Check the tightness of both pieces periodically
  • Avoid touching the magnifier glass

Conclusion

This upgrade can improve your camera experience. While there might be minor limitations with the viewfinder display on some models, the benefits usually outweigh these small compromises.
