If you have a flat-pack bookcase ready to build, putting it together in the right order saves time and prevents wobbly corners. I’ll show you how to assemble the IKEA KALLAX shelf unit step by step.
1. Sort Your Dowels and Hardware
Open the hardware bag and separate the parts on the floor.
You will find two sizes of wooden dowels: thicker dowels for the main outer panels, and thinner dowels for the interior compartment dividers.
Keep the four long hex screws and the small Allen key close by for the frame.
2. Insert Wooden Dowels into Divider Panels
Take each small shelf divider and push the wooden dowels into the pre-drilled edge holes by hand.
Make sure the dowels go in straight until they sit halfway into the wood.
Do not use a heavy hammer. Gentle pressure with your thumb or a light tap is all you need.
3. Assemble the Internal Shelf Grid
Lay one of the long outer panels flat on a clean rug or cardboard box to protect the finish.
Align the divider panels so the dowels slip into the matching holes on the base board.
Build the interior grid upward row by row, locking each partition shelf across the wooden pegs.
4. Attach and Tighten the Outer Frame Panels
Place the top and side outer panels onto the assembled grid, guiding all dowels into their holes.
Insert the long hex screws into the corner holes on the outer frame.
Use the included Allen key to turn each screw clockwise until snug. Stop when the screw head sits flush with the surface.
5. Secure Wall Mounting Safety Brackets
Stand the shelf upright against your chosen wall space.
Attach the two metal angle brackets to the top interior corners of the unit using the small wood screws.
Check the shelf with a bubble level. Mark the wall holes with a pencil, drill suitable wall plugs for your wall type, and fasten the unit securely to prevent tip-over accidents.
Helpful Tips
Never overtighten the outer corner screws with an electric drill, as high torque can strip the hollow particleboard core. Hand-tightening with the manual Allen key provides the perfect grip.
