IKEA Valevag Rolled Mattress Installation in Malm Bed.
Learn how to unpack a vacuum packed mattress. I’ll show you how to unroll and install the IKEA Valevag mattress on the IKEA Malm King size bed.
In a previous video, I showed you how to build the IKEA Malm King Size Bed 180×200. This post picks up right where that one left off – installing the mattress.

What You Need Before Installing the Mattress
For the Malm bed frame itself, you need these parts (from the previous assembly guide):

Important Notes Before You Start
The mattress is heavy. At 44kg (about 97 pounds), it’s better to have 2 people carry it if possible. The mattress comes rolled and vacuum packed, which makes it easier to transport, but it’s still very heavy.
You need scissors. You’ll need to cut the zip ties and the plastic vacuum seal.
Plan for 3 days. The mattress needs about 72 hours to fully expand to its normal shape and size.
Step-by-Step Installation
Step 1: Get the mattress on the bed frame
Position the rolled mattress on top of the slats before opening it. It’s much easier to move the heavy roll onto the bed than to try and move it after it expands.
Step 2: Remove the handles
The mattress has plastic handles attached with zip ties. You can easily remove them by cutting the zip ties. You can keep the handles if you want them for something later.
Step 3: Cut the zip ties
Using scissors, carefully cut the zip ties. Make sure you don’t accidentally pinch or cut the mattress material itself.
Step 4: Open the vacuum seal
Cut open the plastic vacuum seal. As soon as you open it, air will start rushing in and the mattress will begin to inflate.
Step 5: Let it unroll
The mattress will slowly pull in air and expand to its full size. This happens naturally – you don’t need to do anything except let it happen.
What to Expect After Unpacking
Expansion time
The mattress will not reach its actual intended shape and size until you wait for 3 days (72 hours). You can use it right away if you need to, but it won’t be fully expanded yet.
Smell
The mattress might have a bit of smell from gassing. This is normal. IKEA mentions this in their instructions. The smell usually lasts for about 3 days. If you have windows nearby, open them for a while to air out the room.
My experience
To me, the mattress doesn’t really smell much. It’s not a big problem at all. I really like this mattress, especially the extra firm version.

Why I Like the Valevag Mattress
I tried most of the mattresses from IKEA. The Valevag is really my favorite. I like the extra firm version. IKEA makes even more firm mattresses, but this one I prefer because it has a little bit of softness while still being firm.
