I’ll show you the two easiest methods using tools already on your phone. We used a Sony Xperia 1V running Android 14, but these methods work on most Android phones.

How to Scan a QR Code With Your Camera App

This is the fastest way and works on most modern Android phones (typically Android 9 and up).

  1. Open your phone’s main Camera app.
  2. Point the camera directly at the QR code. Make sure the code is in focus and fits within the screen.
  3. Wait a second. Your phone should recognize the code automatically.
  4. A notification pop-up will appear. Tap on it.
  5. Your phone will then take you to the link, show the Wi-Fi password, or display whatever information is stored in the code.

That’s it! No buttons to press. Just point and wait for the pop-up.

How to Scan a QR Code With Google Lens

If your camera app doesn’t automatically scan it, or if you want more control, use Google Lens. It’s a powerful tool built into Android.

  1. Open the Google app on your phone. This is the app you use to search the web.
  2. On the search bar, look to the right for a little camera icon. This is the Google Lens button. Tap it.
  3. Point your camera at the QR code.
  4. Google Lens will instantly scan the code and show you what’s inside. Tap the result to open it.

You can also often access Google Lens directly from your phone’s camera app or by long-pressing on your home screen.

What to Do If Scanning Doesn’t Work

If neither method works, don’t worry. It’s usually a simple fix.

  • Check your connection: Some QR codes need an internet connection to work properly.
  • Clean your lens: A smudgy camera lens can blur the code and make it hard to read.
  • Get closer: Make sure the QR code is clear and not too far away.
  • Try a dedicated app: If all else fails, you can download a free “QR code scanner” app from the Google Play Store. This is a great backup option.

Why It’s a Handy Skill to Have

Knowing how to quickly scan a QR code makes life easier. You can instantly:

  • Join a Wi-Fi network without asking for the password.
  • View a restaurant’s menu.
  • Download an app from a website.
  • Add a new contact to your phone.

It’s a simple trick that saves you time and typing. Next time you see a QR code, you’ll know exactly what to do.
